Chapter 13 Do Not Ask About Those That You Should Not

  • Caitlin went to a pharmacy after leaving Eterman Group; she bought some ice and anti-inflammatory ointment before going back home.
  • It was fortunate her son had gone to the kindergarten with Lily, or else he would’ve asked a lot of questions if he saw her looking this way. Sometimes Caitlin was grateful that she was blessed with an angel like Jordan in her darkest hour. Even though he was young, he knew all that had happened to her.
  • Caitlin’s expression softened up when she thought of her son. When she got back home and applied the ice on her face, the cold sensation made her squint her eyes.
  • Eliza is still not yet married to him until now. Why is that? She had made a big contribution by birthing him a son, and Max loves her, no? He tried to kill me for her, so why didn’t he marry her? Caitlin thought this was weird, so she knew she had to investigate. Though she wouldn’t forget about the slap today that easily, for she would have Eliza pay for it.
  • With how eager Max wanted to work with HJ Group, he would definitely ask Eliza to apologize to her. Even if the man was before her, Caitlin could still return the slap to Eliza, for she was not his wife anymore. That person had died five years ago when the flames engulfed her.
  • Caitlin could still feel the pain of the flames that burned her back then. It was agonizing, despairing, and torturous. Even if she had died back then, this sensation would’ve gone along with her to the depths of the underworld. Now that she was back, she would have those who pained her pay back ten times over.
  • Caitlin held her swollen face as she headed for the bedroom. Without informing the headquarters about the incident, she lay on the bed and slept.
  • Dexter quickly found out where Caitlin was staying. When he handed the address to Max, the latter squinted again. She’s staying at Lily’s place?
  • He knew that Lily was Caitlin’s best friend. Catherine shares the same name as Caitlin, and she stays at Caitlin’s best friend’s place? Is it a coincidence? Or is she Caitlin herself? Max clenched his fists when he thought about this.
  • “Dig up everything about her. I don’t care how you go about it, but I want all there is to know about her, especially info from five years ago.”
  • Max’s orders caught Dexter by surprise. “President Cooper, the US has been keeping everything about Catherine under wraps. There were some who tried to look up on her, but to no avail.”
  • “Use the unconventional method to look her up then.”
  • Dexter was shocked at that order, for he knew what ‘unconventional method’ meant. It had been years since Max last used it, but now he was going to employ it for Catherine. That made him curious. “Is something wrong about Catherine, President Cooper?”
  • “Don’t ask any questions you shouldn’t.”
  • Max’s warning made Dexter quaver. “Understood, I’ll do it right away.”
  • Max lit up a cigarette in frustration after Dexter had left. It had been a while since he smoked, but today, he needed some nicotine to calm himself down.
  • She looks different, but the way she walks is the same as her, and she has the same friend as Caitlin. Is this really a coincidence? But if that is her, then why didn’t she call out to me. He still remembered how much Caitlin was in love with him five years ago. What truly happened five years ago?
  • When online news portals stated that Caitlin was involved in that fire after she met up with her lover and her body was nowhere to be found, he didn’t believe it. A woman who loved him so deeply wouldn’t start to date someone else without even a sign. However, when he wanted to find out about the case, the bodyguards were gone, and Caitlin’s body had disappeared too. Nobody knew what happened back then. He knew she was pregnant five years back, so he thought their children must have also died in that fire.
  • Max frowned as he immersed himself in his thoughts. The cigarette burned slowly, but a while later, it reached and burned his finger. He shivered for a moment and put the cigarette out. After that, he looked at the black spot on his finger as he fell into a trance. He remembered that Caitlin was someone who was afraid of painful sensations. How much pain must she have been in during that fire? It must have came on her hard, burning everything else away.
  • As he thought of all this, Max didn’t have the mood to work anymore. He quickly picked up his suit and exited his office.
  • “Where are you going, President Cooper?”
  • “I’m going out for a bit. Postpone all the meetings today.”
  • Max went out like a wind after that, leaving the secretary looking flabbergasted. This is the first time President Cooper skipped out on work.
  • Max didn’t care how anyone thought of him. He quickly revved up his car and dashed to Lily’s place.
  • When the doorbell rang incessantly, it woke Caitlin up, but she felt lethargic.
  • She knew it couldn’t be Lily, since her friend had the keys. Caitlin didn’t order any deliveries either, so the one who was ringing the doorbell was a mystery to her. Could it be Eliza? If that was her, Caitlin was not going to open the door easily.
