Chapter 8

  • “Where’s your sister now?”
  • He should have called her this week, but things were so busy. “She is safe here in North America. The king finds safe place for her and my men’s families.”
  • “With clans?”
  • “No. He say until all traitors are found, it is no safe to do that. They are all together in a big place until we stop your Tomas and eliminate all the traitors.” She was quiet for too long, so he looked to see she was watching him.
  • “I’m glad they’re safe. I look forward to meeting your sister.” She smiled at him and his heart did that dance again.
  • “She will love you too, beauty Deva.” He inhaled and was very happy that his body filled with her scent.
  • Chuckling, she looked back through the scope. “We are going to have to work on more English.”
  • Smiling, he put his eye back to the lens. “Ja. English is no easy to know. There are so many words that I do not know why they are.”
  • “Like what? Maybe I can clarify for you.”
  • He checked the road slowly and then moved back to the water. No movement was good, but it was going to make for long night. “The words too. Why are there so many toos? One for number, one with one o, one with two o’s—it is a silly thing. I buy a book. There is line that say—I want two of us to be friends too. A lot of to’s. Don’t start me on the there word. Too many. Some of the words make no sense. The driveway. Why it is a driveway when you park on it? Also, the childrens go to play at a park. How is this real? I do not understand this.” He looked over at her. “I don’t want to start on the where words. One is for being there, one for the clothes you have on,” he waved his hand around, “and the one for to call wolf clan, the werewolf.” He snorted. “If they look that way, our kind would rule the world.”
  • Deva laughed. “I can see how that is confusing.” She shifted, and she pulled her phone out of her pocket, and answered it. He thought she must have it do it no make sound.
  • “Yeah?” Her brows creased. “Okay, we’ll watch and see if we can see where.” She put the phone on the ground and moved to look back through the scope. “The guys that left the observation came back and then left again. Your guy Lars is following them while Gideon watches the other two, but one got out at a house and stayed there.”
  • “We watch the car, so Lars watch the one?”
  • “Yes.”
  • Taggart nodded and then shifted and held the rifle up so he could look for cars. “We do this.” He had wanted to talk to her more, but the mission was most important right now. The island where they took girls had to be shut down. Even in his country, they no do something so terrible. Well, they do, but on different level all together.
  • By the time the sun was high in the sky again, they would have this done, and then he could take the time to know his mate. Each time he wanted to rush to claim her, he thought of his sister, Nika, and how she would feel for a man to rush her, and it did no make him feel good, so he would take the time to know his beauty and for her to know him.
  • “Taggart, there’s someone at the docks.”
  • He lifted his head and looked in the direction of the water. “You keep eye there. I have the road.”
  • “Okay. I’m going to call Calum and see if any of ours are down there.”
  • “Good plan.” His beauty was a smart woman too. This pleased him so much. He did no know what he had done in this life of his to deserve such a mate, but he would cherish having her for always.
  • ~
  • The night had been a long one. Watching and waiting had no been the hardest thing to do, but to be so close to his beauty and no having the time to watch her had made it be a more long night. When the rains start, it was only light rain and did no get in the way of the task they were doing. Just as Taggart thought it was going to stop and allow them to see better, the skies opened, and if they had no got off the ground, they could have floated down the hill.
  • Getting out of the car, he closed the door fast and ran over to stand under the overhanging roof of the house. He didn’t know what it was called in English, so to him, it would be the overhanging roof.
  • Deva followed him and then turned to watch the rain. “What are the chances they didn’t take my bag to the boat yet?”
  • Taking off his jacket, he gave it a shake. It was dripping. “I watch them unpack van and put it on boat.”
  • “Great.” She took off her jacket and looked down. “I hope there’s a dryer here.”
  • “To dry clothes?” He tried not to think of what she would wear while she did this.
  • “Yeah.” She motioned to the car. “At least we got the guns in the car before the angry gods tried to drown us.”
  • Taggart grinned. “You think gods were angry?”
  • She shrugged. “Not really. It’s just something we say.”
  • “I see.” He thought about that for a moment, but it no make sense in his head. Headlights lit up the drive as the van pulled in. “I think this is good, the rains.”
  • “Good, how?” She pulled her tied-back hair through her hand to remove some of the water.
  • “No tourist peoples and boats will be on the water.”
  • She looked up at him. “That’s a good point.”
  • He didn’t mean to do it, but it happened before he could think about it. Leaning down, he put his face close to her neck and drew in a long breath. “You smell good covered in rain, beauty Deva.” Instead of backing away from him, she turned her head until there was so few space between them that the only thing he could think was he had to kiss her.
  • “Some of the things you say—” She bit her lip, and his eyes could only look there, “are so lame they’re adorable.” She crinkled up her nose, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
  • “You are like little mouse, ja, even when you show teeth.”
  • She jerked her head back and gave him a cold look. “Whatever.” Turning, she went over to the door and pulled it open.
  • Taggart straightened up and stared at the door when it slammed shut. He didn’t know why that was the wrong thing to say.
