Chapter 11 Why Did Elijah Lie

  • Xavier paused in his tracks when he heard that, only to walk off without saying a word.
  • Clarice tensed up subconsciously when she heard footsteps outside the door. The bedroom she was in belonged to both her and Xavier when they got married, so she had no right to stop him from entering at all. To her surprise, the footsteps grew distant after a few seconds.
  • Xavier left...
  • Clarice let out a sigh of relief and locked the door after making sure he wasn't coming back.
  • She then threw her exhausted body on the bed and fell asleep shortly after.
  • Clarice wasn't able to sleep well that night and left the house at six in the morning the next day. She saw Henry doing some Taichi in the garden to keep himself fit and decided to join him as she needed some fresh air.
  • It was soon time for breakfast, and Clarice helped Henry to his seat at the table before sitting down on the other side.
  • “Mind your step, Grandpa.”
  • Connor then came out of the kitchen with the housekeepers and served up breakfast.
  • Clarice paused when she noticed a pair of cutlery prepared for the seat next to hers.
  • Is Xavier here too?
  • “Connor, go check on Xavier and see what he's doing. It's time for breakfast, for goodness' sake!”
  • Connor nodded and went off looking for Xavier, only to see him coming down the stairs with a cold look on his face.
  • “Morning, Grandpa.”
  • “Took you long enough!” Henry shouted fiercely at him.
  • Xavier was a lot more well-behaved around Henry and simply shrugged in response before sitting down next to Clarice.
  • “I want you to help Clair out with the preparations for the party after breakfast. Don't you go slacking off, you hear?”
  • “Got it,” Xavier nodded reluctantly.
  • Feeling satisfied, Henry shifted his gaze toward Clarice and said, “Clair, this party is meant to welcome Elijah's return to the country. I'll have the housekeepers tidy up his room, so you don't have to worry about that. Elijah has spent way too much time overseas and is still single even though he's in his thirties, so we'll be inviting more socialites over in hopes of getting him a significant other. As his uncle, I wish for nothing but his happiness.”
  • “All right, I understand.”
  • So this party was meant to welcome Elijah's return, huh... If I'm not mistaken, Uncle Elijah should be thirty-two by now.
  • “Will we be getting Uncle Elijah's bedroom ready by tonight?”
  • “No, Elijah's flight is tomorrow morning.”
  • “Tomorrow morning?”
  • How could that be? Who the hell was I sleeping with two nights ago, then? Could he have lied to Grandpa about his flight details and had actually returned sooner? But why would he do that?
  • Clarice found herself growing anxious as countless questions popped up in her head.
  • “Xavier, I want you to pick Elijah up at the airport tomorrow morning.”
  • “Got it...” Xavier said reluctantly as he hated being treated like a chauffeur.
  • Henry left for the office after breakfast.
  • With no one around to supervise Xavier, there was no way he would stay and help Clarice out. “This is your job now that you've married into the Zimmerman family!” he said sarcastically and left, much to her relief.
  • I just don't understand Xavier's behavior at all! What happened to the gentle and caring man that I married? Why did he undergo such a huge change all of a sudden? I thought life after marriage would be all sunshine and rainbows, but all that's left is pain and suffering... The only thing I'm certain of right now is how much I fear him...
  • Time went by in a flash, and it was soon the day of the party.
