Chapter 8 Awkward Atmosphere

  • Ruan Cheng did not say anything after the boy glared at her.
  • Time passed by slowly.
  • The boy said, “The atmosphere seems very awkward.”
  • The girl nodded.
  • Ruan Cheng, “...”
  • “Madam, you can give my father a call now, and tell him that you don't want to look after us,” the boy proclaimed.
  • He was a very aggressive boy.
  • She felt the need to explain, “It's not that I'm unwilling to look after you.”
  • No one would dare to say that they were unwilling to take care of the boss' children. That would be asking for trouble.
  • “Well, is that the attitude you should have if you're trying to take care of us?” the boy was obviously unhappy with this cold atmosphere.
  • This lady seemed a lot dumber than the others.
  • Ruan Cheng, “...”
  • She should have checked her horoscope before leaving home.
  • “Come here brother,” the girl saw that Ruan Cheng was unhappy, and dragged her brother off angrily.
  • Ruan Cheng exhaled deeply and went to check on the two kids in the restroom.
  • In the restroom.
  • The sister asked, “Brother, how could you treat the pretty lady that way?”
  • “She has an ulterior motive for this. These pretty ladies are only taking care of us because they want to marry Daddy.” The brother felt sorry for his sister's ignorance.
  • “Marry Daddy?” the sister was confused.
  • The brother continued, “At least the other ladies try to entertain us, but look at her!”
  • If this lady had married their Daddy, she would definitely be nastier to them.
  • The sister maintained her stance, “Great-grandpa always tells us not to judge a book by its cover!”
  • The brother continued furiously, “I don't care about what you feel. I only have one mother, and that's the woman who gave birth to me!”
  • The sister was enraged as well, and replied innocently, “Great-grandpa said we were harvested from the vegetable patch!”
  • “Idiot!” The brother turned red with anger, and stormed out of the toilet.
  • Ruan Cheng nearly jumped with fright.
  • What an attitude!
  • “Sorry, I don't know how to get along well with children and ruin the atmosphere.” Ruan Cheng felt guilty about this.
  • The sister pouted, “It's his fault!”
  • Ruan Cheng looked at the brother and tried to salvage the situation, “Do you want to watch cartoons? Do you guys want to watch Peppa Pig or Power Rangers?” She reached for the remote.
  • “Childish!” the brother could not help but scorned at her stupidity.
  • Ruan Cheng felt embarrassed.
  • The room fell into another state of silence.
  • “Madam, why don't you ask how old we are?”
  • Ruan Cheng took the hint and asked, “So, how old are you guys?”
  • “I'm five. He’s is also five.”
  • “Have you started attending school?” If they were already schooling, then they should be in one now since it was a Thursday.
  • “He and I both have lessons. We are home-schooled, but Daddy brought us out to play this time. He said that this city had a big and tall Ferris wheel.” the sister described in detail.
  • “Oh!” Ruan Cheng exclaimed.
  • “Give me your phone. I want to call my father,” the brother requested.
  • Ruan Cheng was stunned, but nevertheless passed her phone to the brother.
  • Mu Ancheng took Ruan Cheng's phone and searched for his father's phone number and WeChat, but he was unable to find either.
  • “You don't have my father's contact details?” the brother looked up and asked.
  • Ruan Cheng shook her head. “I don't.”
  • The brother did not seem convinced and frowned. “You really don't have it?”
  • “Like I told you, this lady isn't a bad woman who wants to be our stepmom!” the sister glared at her brother from her seat.
  • The brother glanced at his sister full of guilt, and did not even dare to look at Ruan Cheng.
  • Ruan Cheng finally understood!
  • She understood why the rascal was so aggressive towards her.
  • “I feel like I need to make things clear. Your father left you guys to Mr. Dong Liyan, and he asked me to look after you guys because he was busy with work. I have no relationship with your father outside of work. I am simply his subordinate.” Ruan Cheng looked the boy in the eye, followed by the girl.
  • The boy gazed curiously at Ruan Cheng.
  • Ruan Cheng expressed clearly, “Your father and I are two different classes of people. Some people are born special, and some are born as commoners. They seek different goals and have different social circles. It's not possible to force such different people together. Do you guys understand?”
  • “No...” the sister shook her head blankly.
  • Ruan Cheng turned to the brother.
  • The brother replied, “I understand. Daddy is from the upper-upper class, while you are just a peasant.”
  • Ruan Cheng laughed, “That's a ruthless but an accurate way to describe it. There is a huge gap between your father and I. Don't worry. Even if your father is the only man left on earth, I would never be your stepmother. Do you guys understand now?”
  • The sister stared at Ruan Cheng and nodded, but it was hard to tell if she truly understood.
  • “Alright, let's be friendly with one another. My name is Ruan Cheng, so you guys can call me Ms. Ruan or Ms. Cheng.” Ruan Cheng introduced herself.
  • “I'm Mu Ruanruan.”
  • “I'm Mu Ancheng, but you can call me Anan.” the brother introduced himself as well, and his hostility had vanished into thin air.
  • Mu Ruanruan?
  • Ruan?
  • Mu Ancheng?
  • Cheng?
  • Ruan? Cheng?
  • Ruan Cheng suddenly felt that she was fated to meet these two kids!
  • After the misunderstanding was cleared, the two kids enjoyed their time with her.
  • The dinner with her colleagues had been cancelled.
  • The other two colleagues started work after dinner, but her current job was to entertain the boss' kids.
  • Ruan Cheng was cautious with them initially, afraid that they might injure themselves. After a while, she was playing with the two kids on the carpet, and overcome with a sense of satisfaction and sorrow.
  • Her child would be around Anan and Ruanruan's age by now.
  • Through Anan and Ruanruan's smiling faces, she could almost see her own child.
  • Who knew if the child was doing well?
  • Ruan Cheng took the two kids out for dinner.
  • The hotel's restaurant had all sorts of cuisine. Ruanruan sat at the restaurant and ate for a while, but she was drawn to the fried chicken another child was having at the other table. She started salivating.
  • “Wipe it off. It's dirty!” Anan frowned and chided.
  • Ruan Cheng hurriedly took some tissues and wiped Ruanruan's drool.
  • “Your father forbids you from eating fried chicken?” Ruan Cheng could not help but feel bad for them. If her own daughter had craved fried chicken so badly, she would probably let her have it just once.
  • Ruanruan nodded, her eyes still glued to the fried chicken. She was so distracted that her chopsticks had dropped onto the floor.
  • “Excuse me, waiter.” Ruan Cheng signaled for a waiter.
  • Ten minutes later.
  • Two pieces of fried chicken were served.
  • Anan did not eat any, and let her sister have everything. He really wanted to try the fried chicken, but he lied, “Have it all. Daddy said that a man must stick to his own morals.”
  • Ruan Cheng said nothing, but she was awed by him. For someone who just turned five, he had a lot of self-control when faced with temptation.
  • Some adults were able to walk the path of extraordinary success. Not all of their paths were as smooth-sailing as it had seemed to outsiders. Behind the scenes, no one knew exactly how much they had restrained themselves and how high of an expectation they had for themselves.
  • Like Mu Chenjue?
  • This aloof and wary boy reminded her of Li Xiao's words: the boss was a ruthless dictator at work.
  • And this little boy was a carbon copy of his father!
