Chapter 7 A Strange Li Ye

  • Ruan Cheng had left.
  • Mu Chenjue put the blueprint he had on hand aside, left his desk, walked towards the cupboard and poured himself half a glass of wine. He frowned, and finished it in one gulp.
  • Those accursed desires!
  • It was very late by the time Ruan Cheng had left the office. Fortunately, she managed to catch the last train home.
  • When she reached home, she replied to Li Ye's message on WeChat.
  • After messaging, she searched for a suitable luggage and started packing the necessary items for the next day's trip.
  • At this moment, her phone rang.
  • It was Li Ye.
  • “Why haven't you slept? Didn't I tell you to rest early and not to call?” Ruan Cheng picked up the phone and asked concernedly.
  • “We're not done yet. I'll be working overtime at the hotel. I just received your message. Why are you going on a business trip as well? Who are you going with?” Li Ye replied.
  • “I'm not sure who yet. I'll know tomorrow.” Ruan Cheng replied.
  • “If there are male coworkers tagging along, then make sure to keep your distance. We only just started working with them, so we don't know them well yet.” Li Ye instructed.
  • “Alright, I got it,” Ruan Cheng replied. She heard a series of banging, as though someone was knocking on the door.
  • Or rather, they were ramming against the door.
  • “What's wrong?” Ruan Cheng asked concernedly.
  • “Not... nothing at all. I'll talk to you later. I'll check out what's going on outside.” Li Ye started to stutter.
  • Before Ruan Cheng could tell him to stay safe, he had already hung up.
  • She looked down at her luggage, and then at her phone. She could not help but worry that something would happen to Li Ye since he was unfamiliar with the foreign province.
  • The night passed peacefully.
  • The following day.
  • Ruan Cheng received a text from her colleagues early in the morning.
  • She waited for her colleague at the lobby of her apartment. She waited for Li Ye's call until late at night, but it never came. She looked noticeably tired.
  • She tried calling over, but his phone was turned off.
  • Less than twenty minutes later, a black Bentley pulled over, and a man and woman got out of the car.
  • They briefly exchanged introductions before they all got into the car together.
  • The journey to their destination took seven hours by car. Since they needed a car to get around there as well, the higher-ups arranged for the man to drive one of the company cars over for convenience.
  • Ruan Cheng chatted happily with her colleagues along the way, and the car was full of laughter.
  • When they arrived in H City, it was already in the afternoon.
  • After checking into the hotel, the female colleague, Su, told Ruan Cheng, “We can take a break and freshen up in our room first. We will call you when it's time for dinner.”
  • “Alright.” Ruan Cheng nodded.
  • She pushed her luggage up to her room and took a shower before changing into pajamas. She then brought out her office wear and ironed it.
  • She hung it up to standby.
  • After settling down, it was already 4pm.
  • There had been no news of Li Ye since the previous night, not even a text or call.
  • Now that she had some free time, she gave him a call.
  • His phone was on this time.
  • The phone rang a few times, but no one answered it.
  • Ruan Cheng got even more worried. She called again, but the call was rejected.
  • Li Ye quickly sent a WeChat message over: Sorry, I'm busy. I can't pick up calls now, but I'll contact you soon.
  • Ruan Cheng replied: Okay, focus on your work.
  • It seemed that he was safe and sound. The person knocking on his door yesterday might have been a drunkard entering the wrong room.
  • After replying, Ruan Cheng set her phone aside to do other things.
  • The next moment, her phone vibrated.
  • She turned back once again to view the notification.
  • It was a WeChat message full of nonsense: Hahahaha guess my fire ball opened location fee...
  • The sender was the 'busy' Li Ye.
  • Ruan Cheng frowned.
  • She replied with a question mark.
  • After a moment or so, he replied: I was doing a technical drawing and my hand rested on my phone by mistake. The autocorrect did the rest. That was the reason for his incoherent text.
  • Ruan Cheng did not think much of this.
  • Ding dong!
  • The doorbell rang.
  • “Who's there?” Ruan Cheng was especially alert in an unfamiliar city.
  • A middle-aged male voice replied, “Ms. Ruan, I'm Mr. Mu's assistant Dong Liyan. I need you to open the door.”
  • Dong Liyan was Mu Chenjue's most trusted aide, and anyone who worked in the T company would have heard of him. Ruan Cheng may be new, but she knew of this person.
  • She opened the door.
  • “Good afternoon.” Ruan Cheng greeted him, and immediately noticed the two children near her feet.
  • It was a little boy and a little girl. Both were fair and adorable.
  • Dong Liyan was wearing a suit. He explained, “These are Mr. Mu's children. Their father is busy with work and doesn't have time to look after them, so...”
  • Ruan Cheng had a bad feeling about this.
  • It was not that she disliked looking after children, but she felt something was wrong. She was here to work, not to be a servant.
  • The other reason why she felt uneasy was that she was afraid that she would think of her own child when she interacted with other people's children.
  • “I... I promise I'll be good,” the girl said softly.
  • The girl looked up at Ruan Cheng with her doe eyes.
  • “Brother...” the little girl saw that her brother was silent. She pouted and tugged at the corner of his shirt, trying to make him say something.
  • Ruan Cheng turned to the boy.
  • He was obviously taller than his sister. He had an aloof expression, but it was clear that he loved his sister. He looked up at Ruan Cheng and complied, “I promise I will be obedient too.”
  • Dong Liyan glanced at his watch and said, “I'll leave the kids to you then Ms. Ruan. I have other matters to attend to, so I'll be leaving for now.”
  • Ruan Cheng did not even have a chance to object.
  • After Dong Liyan left, Ruan Cheng looked at the two of them in the eyes and said, “The two of you can come in.”
  • The girl took his brother's hand and walked into the room together.
  • “Do you guys want anything to drink?” Ruan Cheng had no experience dealing with kids, especially not children with special status like them.
  • “Milk,” the girl replied as she took a seat on the sofa obediently.
  • Ruan Cheng hurriedly went to find milk. The milk from the minibar was expensive. It would cost seventy cents in a supermarket, but it was eighteen here.
  • She sighed at the price tag but still opened the milk, pouring a cup for each of them.
  • The aloof brother did not drink a bit.
  • The sister, however, swung her legs happily as she finished a cup, and licked her lips happily.
  • Ruan Cheng stared awkwardly at the two children on the sofa and tried to initiate a conversation, “So, are you twins?”
  • “Of course,” the brother replied indifferently. He shot Ruan Cheng with a look of pure despise.
  • Idiot! Anyone can tell that we're twins judging by our outlook!
