CHAPTER 5 Stephanie, Behave Yourself

  • 'Jack, what I want to do with this child is my business. We are divorced. You cannot interfere my decisions!" Stephanie raised her head to look at his eyes which were bathed in rage. She was speaking in neither humble nor condescending way.
  • Jack tightened his grip on Stephanie's wrist, speechless. He strode to the wedding room, regardless of Stephanie's resistance.
  • All red. Just like that night. But things had changed now.
  • Jack pulled Stephanie forcefully and compelled her to sit on the bed without even looking at her. After that, he walked directly out of the room and shut the door. It all happened so fast that Stephanie didn't even have time to react.
  • Stephanie began to panic. She got up from the bed and slapped the door to protest. 'Jack, let me out! Don't do this, don't…"
  • 'Stephanie, behave yourself!" Jack warned her before he walked away.
  • As the footstep got fainter, Stephanie fell down to the floor. The floor was cold, but her heart was freezing.
  • Jack, why don't you believe me? I didn't, I didn't… Tears ran down uncontrollably. Her nose and cheek were all red. She felt unfairly treated, but who cared?
  • 'Jack, the person I love is you. It has always been you. You know this…" Stephanie murmured to herself.
  • She curled up at a corner. The heat in her body slowly wore away. She kept crying till she fell asleep. Even in dreams, she still felt wronged.
  • Jack threw his limp body on the couch. He started to smoke, looking at a photo of Steve not far away. Steve, she owed you this. I will make her pay the price! I will!
  • He quickened his pace to upstairs with food on his hands. He opened the door, but didn't see Stephanie. Anger again filled his chest. Did she jump out of the window?
  • He put the food on the table. When he turned around, he saw Stephanie curled up in a corner. 'Stephanie, you…" He came closer but found that she had fainted.
  • Jack's big hand grabbed her arm. Her fever disturbed him. 'Damn it! Stephanie, how dare you!"
  • While he was speaking to himself, he carried her to his bedroom. He placed her gently on the bed, called the family doctor and did some preliminary treatments. Looking at her uneasy face, agitation arose again.
  • Liz came over to look for Jack. After witnessing Jack's tender care of the unconscious Stephanie and hearing the housekeepers talking about her pregnancy, Liz nearly crushed her teeth.
  • 'Jack, what makes you so upset? Go get some rest. I will take care of Stephanie." Liz came to Jack, leaned her head on his shoulder, and said in a sweet tone.
  • Jack got rid of her hands and pinched the tip of his nose. 'Liz, ask the housekeeper if the chicken soup is ready. Tell her to make it quicker if it's not." There was some visible cyan in his eyes, along with some red blood strings. Even Jack himself didn't know how long he had been awake. All he knew was that he hadn't slept since Stephanie got feverish.
  • Liz had to suppress her rage. She put a suit jacket on his back. 'Fine. I will go. Take a rest."
  • As she spoke, she went downstairs with her high heels.
  • Liz asked the housekeeper politely, 'Ms. Black, Jack has been busy for quite a while. I am making him some soup. Could you please go buy some vegetables?" She suddenly paused. It seemed like something came up to her mind. 'Forget it. Jack asked you to serve the soup ASAP. I will go for the vegetables myself."
  • 'Thank you, Ms. Jose. You are so nice…" The housekeeper thanked her.
  • Soon after, Liz went out. Sitting on the car, hatred towards Stephanie started surging in her mind. She then went to buy some med prohibited from pregnant women and some of Jack's favorite vegetables, and drove back at full speed. Luckily, right when she arrived, she saw the housekeeper going upstairs with the soup in her hands. She came to her in a hurry and took the soup with a thoughtful smile. 'Ms. Black, I will bring the soup to him. You may go prepare the meal now." As she spoke, she passed the vegetable to the housekeeper.
  • 'Thank you." The housekeeper went into the kitchen with the vegetable. Liz put the drug in the soup and went upstairs.
  • Upstairs, she saw Stephanie awake and speaking to Jack with a wronged look. Jack, however, was impatient and didn't seem to care at all. Liz then came over to mediate. 'Jack, be patient with girls."
  • 'You feed her." Jack gave a sign of relief when he saw Liz.
  • Liz smiled. She looked at Jack, her eyes gentle and meek. 'Alright." She took the soup and fed Stephanie for several spoons of soup.
  • After making sure she swallowed a few mouthfuls of it, Liz smiled with satisfaction. She then spoke to Stephanie in a volume that only they two could hear, 'Stephanie, I am sorry. I drugged the soup."
  • Hearing her words, Stephanie first glared at her, and then knocked over the soup in front of Jack, acting as if she had gone mad.
  • Stephanie promptly pulled away the quilt that was covering her, but was tripped over when she tried to get up. Sharp pain arose in her belly. Blood ran down from her jeans, dyeing the floor red.
  • Jack watched all these in rage. He never thought that Stephanie would be bold enough to kill the baby in front of him. 'Stephanie, how dare you…"
  • 'Jack, no, it isn't…" Before she could finish her words, she was lifted up by Jack.
