Chapter 9 Standing Up for His Wife
- Hearing the familiar voice, Milicent raised her head to see Gary pushing Hansel into the room. The forbidding figure she usually avoided became oddly comforting at this moment.
- Hansel glanced at her indifferently, but her teary eyes caught him off guard, mesmerizing him. They reminded him of ripples caused by pebbles falling into a calm lake.
- Milicent was not ugly. On the contrary, her facial features were well-defined, with long, curled eyelashes and eyes resembling crystals. The tears in her eyes made them shimmer like stars in the galaxy.
- At this time, she looked so helpless, with tears clung to her eyelashes and her eyes slightly swollen. Seeing her fighting back tears evoked the urge to comfort her. Moreover, her face was oddly pale, as if she was ill.
- Hansel's heart could not help but ache a little. His gaze turned even colder as he looked at the gossiping servants.
- "Mr… Mr. Fulbright…" The servants lowered their heads, afraid to speak.
- "Who slandered my wife?"
- Milicent was shocked when she heard his words. He had acknowledged her as his wife before everyone.
- The servants, who had mocked Milicent, were so terrified of his intimidating demeanor that they began trembling.
- Hansel's piercing gaze swept over each of them, and after a moment, he said, "Since no one is willing to confess, you're all dismissed. No one will hire you again."
- "It's them! The four of them slandered Mrs. Fulbright!" Hearing that everyone would be fired, the servant who did not speak ill of Milicent immediately pointed to the four other servants near her. The four servants were so scared that they immediately kneeled on the floor, begging for mercy.
- "We're sorry, Mr. Fulbright…"
- "We're sorry, Mrs. Fulbright! Please forgive us this time!"
- "Mrs. Fulbright, please give us another chance!"
- Hansel sneered, "Gary."
- "Yes, sir!" Gary immediately ordered the bodyguards to drag the four servants out of the house.
- Milicent stood still while looking at the servants as they repeatedly asked for forgiveness. She was not a saint and would not plead for those who had bullied her. She knew that once she did, they would only become worse.
- After the four servants were dragged away, the hall instantly fell silent.
- "Next time, if any of you dare to disrespect my wife again, the consequences won't be as simple. Are you clear?" Hansel sternly warned the remaining servants, who dared not even breathe.
- "Yes! Mr. Fulbright!"
- Hansel waved to dismiss the servants. He then stared at Milicent with mixed feelings. After a while, he said, "You are still Mrs. Fulbright until I find her."
- Milicent asked without thinking, "Find who?"
- Hansel's gaze instantly turned intimidating. "Don't ask too many questions! Don't forget your status in this house!"
- After warning her, Hansel signaled Gary and left in his wheelchair without sparing Milicent another glance. However, his eyebrows frowned involuntarily. Somehow, he had been acting strangely toward her recently.
- Milicent pursed her lips as she watched him leave. He’s right. Why should I care about who he’s searching for? It has nothing to do with me. He defended me just now because those servants had shamed him, too. After all, I’m his nominal wife. I don’t care about anything as long as he doesn’t force me to leave.
- The next day, Milicent woke up and changed into simple clothes. Then, she put on a hat and went to the hospital. The test results from yesterday kept her awake all night, and she desperately hoped they were incorrect.
- After entering the hospital, Milicent took a pair of sunglasses and a mask from her bag. She put them on as an extra precaution, fearing she would bump into someone from the Fulbright Family. Unfortunately, her peculiar disguise attracted other's attention as she waited in line. She had wanted to keep a low profile, but it seemed to have caused the opposite effect.
- When it was finally Milicent's turn, the doctor frowned because only her eyes were visible. Just as he was about to inquire about her condition, a loud crash echoed as several tall, burly figures in black barged in, startling the doctor. "Who are you? Security! Security, there's trouble here!"
- Milicent was alarmed to see the intruders charging toward her. She attempted to stand up, but one of the men grabbed her, carried her on his shoulder, and dashed away.
- "Argh! What are you doing? Let me go!" Milicent felt nauseous being carried like a sack of potatoes. She thrashed about, kicking and screaming, "Help! Help!"
- …
- Hansel frowned as he looked at the empty West Brook villa. "Where is she?"
- Hearing about a suspicious woman being sighted in a hospital's gynecology department, Hansel immediately left work and rushed over.
- "She'll be here soon," Gary replied respectfully.
- Just then, a scream pierced the air. "What are you guys doing? Put me down!"
