Chapter 4 Are You Really That Desperate?
- "It's not that…" Milicent had already started to tear up. She didn't know if it was due to the pain or her panic. I've already gotten this far. I can't fail now! I must stay in Fulbright Residence. "I was just… Argh!" Hansel pushed her away before she could explain. "I'm even more disgusted by pretentious tramps like you!"
- Hansel turned around and wheeled himself away without looking at Milicent, who had fallen to the ground miserably. Milicent bit her lower lip lightly as she watched him leave. He didn't ask me to leave the Fulbright Residence. This means I can stay, right?
- She wrapped herself in the covers again and returned to bed. She felt relieved after no one had chased her out after more than ten minutes. It seemed that she had succeeded.
- Milicent slept alone in the empty room the whole night. Hansel seemed to have accepted her proposal of being husband and wife on paper. They wouldn't get involved with each other beyond that.
- After Milicent got dressed, she went downstairs, where a group of servants was busy working. She was about to approach them to ask where the kitchen was when she suddenly tripped over a broom. Milicent staggered and immediately fell forward uncontrollably. "Ah!"
- Just as she was about to land painfully on the ground, a pair of large hands caught her in time. Milicent was still in shock as she looked up and met a pair of gentle eyes. "Are you alright, Millie?"
- "Millie?"
- "I'm Hansel's elder brother. My name is Jarold," Jarold Fulbright said gently. Before Milicent could answer, a cold voice rang. "It seems like I came at a bad time." This voice… Milicent looked over to the source of the voice to see Gary Sibley pushing Hansel over. A thin blanket covered his legs as he sat in his wheelchair.
- Although he was in a wheelchair, he still looked arrogant. His eyes were icy, and his sharp gaze fell on Milicent. She couldn't help but shiver as she met his icy stare. Then, she realized she was still in Jarold's arms. She retreated to keep a distance from him before guiltily lowering her head.
- "Hansel, it's rare to see you at home." Jarold smiled at his younger brother. However, Hansel's attitude toward Jarold was entirely different. Hansel had a nonchalant expression as he nodded slightly. "Jarold."
- "Alright. I'll be on my way for now." With that, Jarold looked at Milicent and said gently, "Millie, I must go to the office now, so I'll be leaving." Upon hearing this, Milicent nodded blankly and watched as Jarold left. Just as she was about to look away, she heard Hansel say disdainfully, "Are all divorced women this desperate? You're in a hurry to seduce men, aren't you?"
- Upon hearing this, Milicent suddenly came to her senses. "What did you say?" Hansel had a stormy expression, and dark shadows were under his eyes. Milicent could feel his hostility toward her. Milicent bit her lips. "I'm not as vile as you think."
- "Really?" Hansel had a sarcastic smile on the corners of his lips. He had no respect for her at all. "You got married right after your divorce. Aren't you vile?" Milicent clenched her fists, anger welling up within her. Did I ask for this? I was forced to marry him.
- "You better keep your promises and stay away from the Fulbright family. If I find out you're up to no good under the Fulbright family's name or have bad intentions toward my family, I'll make you suffer." After that, Hansel called out to Gary, who wheeled him away.
- After they left, a female servant came over and said to Milicent, "Madam, Master Fulbright wants to see you." Master Fulbright? Is that Hansel's grandfather? Milicent suddenly felt nervous.
- Her mom had said that none of the Fulbrights had met Mary, so they were confident enough to make Milicent marry Hansel instead of Mary. Master Fulbright wants to meet me now. Will I be exposed? Milicent followed the female servant nervously. "Madam, this way." The female servant was very courteous. Milicent thanked her and walked cautiously into the study room.
- The study room was adorned with vintage decorations and bookshelves like she had imagined. Various pens and quills were on the shelves, making the room look solemn. Milicent only took a brief look at her surroundings before immediately looking away. She turned to look at the other person in the room. "H-Hello, Master Fulbright."
- As Milicent looked at Master Fulbright, she froze when she met his shrewd gaze. He was sizing her up. She suddenly felt nervous as she thought about how she was impersonating her sister. She was at a loss as she looked down, fearing he would see through her guilty conscience. I managed to appease Hansel for now, but what if Master Fulbright finds out I'm not Mary?
- "Mary."
- "Huh?" Milicent raised her head instinctively. She quickly looked down after meeting Master Fulbright's sharp gaze. He spoke grimly. "Hansel has been in poor health since he was a child. Since you're married to him, you should take good care of him in the future. I don't have to tell you about your responsibilities as a wife, right?"
- "I understand."
- "You'll work as Hansel's assistant from tomorrow onwards."
- Milicent looked up in surprise. "But…"
- "It's been decided. You'll follow Hansel to work from tomorrow onwards and stay by his side!"
