Chapter 19 We Are At War!

  • "Kuralis! What are you hiding from me?" Kendra forgot that she was also keeping her son's state of health from him and has been evading the topic since she got here.
  • Gavin didn't try to hide anything from his mother, nor did he tell her too much about what was going on.
  • For instance, Gavin didn't tell his mother about decay being used on him, nor is Kendra aware that her son was nearly killed in the Hardwood forest as a result of decay.
  • Gavin is well aware of the fact that Ortiz or Wesley might have told his sister, but Minnie would never tell their mother about it.
  • The last thing Kurah would do is to make Kendra worry about them. She already has too much on her plate as it is.
  • All Kendra knows is that Gavin was attacked at the Dark-dawn Avenue and the battle was a very fierce one that got all the rogues killed and placed her son on death's door. However, neither Wesley nor Ortiz told the Luna about the real culprit behind the attack.
  • As they tried to avoid panic till the Alpha regains consciousness, everyone was made to believe that it was the rogues who led the attack against them.
  • No one outside their small circle of trusted aides was even told the real state of Gavin's health. As a result, the masterminds do not really know whether their plans to eliminate Alpha Gavin worked or not.
  • "Mother!" Came Gavin's weak voice, to which Kendra gave a low grunt to show that he has her attention. He then continued to ask "what do you think about the attack?"
  • Kendra remained silent and in deep thought when she heard her son's weak voice once again, "please be extra careful in these few days until I am up on my feet!"
  • Gavin really didn't give his mother any time to react before he finally concluded his talk "Have Kurah check you thoroughly mom...We are at war...and we need to be well prepared!"
  • Kendra realized the situation may be direr than she thought it to be. However, the knowledge of her son being in control of things calmed her heart down.
  • However, what she didn't know is that even Gavin himself was not aware of who the real enemy was. Keeping his mother in the loop would be the best way for her to handle the situation on her end.
  • Her knowledge of the danger they face, no matter how limited, would keep her on her toes. Besides, Gavin knows his sister wouldn't watch their mother get hurt in these times.
  • When Kendra left her son's chambers, she cleaned him thoroughly and covered him properly, so he doesn't catch a cold. Prior to that, she fed her sick son for the first time in a very long time.
  • Kuralis has been an independent child even when he was young. No one ever had to worry about him and this took away a lot of interactions between mother and son.
  • Gavin allowed his mother to treat him like a toddler, just so she could allay her fears and worry less about him.
  • However, Kendra left with a heavy heart, as she dreaded Gavin's reaction when he comes to know that Kurah is not in Wolftown, nor is she even anywhere in their kingdom at the moment.
  • As Kendra turned to move down the corridor after exiting the bed-chamber of Gavin, she suddenly met face to face with Drusilla who immediately bowed to her in greeting.
  • She was surprised to see the little girl lingering in the vicinity as she thought she had left to the servant quarters after Gavin regained consciousness. However, the reality got her a little shocked to see her.
  • "Wesley tells me you've been here for the past month, not moving an inch from the bed-chamber of the Alpha. You spend the night in the cold corridor and always report when there is the slightest change in his condition"
  • "My lady, I am just doing my job!" Drusilla bowed and responds politely. Kendra stared at her up and down and catches her off-guard "perhaps you enjoy his presence so much you wish to move to his bed chambers?"
  • Drusilla felt like her soul was flying out of her body as she kneels at that very instance and declares in a solemn voice filled with unadulterated reverence and absolute sincerity, "I wouldn't dare, my lady!"
  • Kendra felt that she had stressed the little girl enough and decided to allow her to continue her work. She then holds her hand to lift her from her current kneeling position and taps her hand gently like she will do her daughter.
  • The nineteen-year-old Drusilla is only three years older than her youngest daughter, Kurah, at the same time, she is a year younger than her firstborn son, Kuralis whom she serves overly dutifully.
  • Kendra's action of a simple tap on the back of her hand got her startled and an inexplicable warmth from nowhere flooded her heart afterward. There was an immeasurable joy that Drusilla couldn't explain.
  • She couldn't remember the first or last time her mother tapped her hand that way, because she died giving birth to her. Her stubborn father blamed her for everything and treated her as more of an enemy than an only child.
  • Her stepmother also tried everything she could to rid herself of the little girl whom she believes would end up competing against her future children.
  • As a result, Drusilla never knew or felt what familial love was. It explains why she chose to serve as a maid in the palace, rather than working in other establishments of the Dark-Dawn pack like many others from her pack.
  • However, working here as a servant has earned Drusilla the trust and respect of many, including Kurah who tasked her with exclusively attending to her brother, even in his most vulnerable state.
  • Kendra saw an emotion she recognized all too well and says, "thank you for being there for him. You did a good job!"
  • There was no response as the maid continuously stared at her feet, only for her mistress to lift her chin and say with utmost sincerity, "you've been a great help!"
  • Drusilla spoke faster than her brain could process, "thank you, my lady! I'll keep doing my best" before she held her tongue from saying more.
  • Kendra gave her the most beautiful smile Drusilla had ever seen before e walking away, and the young lady would have this face etched in her heart for a very long time.
  • What Drusilla didn't say however is that she gave her word to Kurah that she would serve the Alpha with her all. Drusilla happens to be the only one who is privy to the exact health condition of the Alpha apart from his two sidekicks and therefore couldn't slack in attending to him.
  • Luna Kendra however only sees a dutiful servant who will do anything to please her boss.
  • The Dark-dawn pack has saved her from a lot of hardships, even though they destroyed and annexed her pack. Drusilla feels no apprehension towards them in the least.
