• Charlotte stared at her phone, her fingers hovering over the contact for Agent Blake. Since the harrowing events at the bank nearly weeks ago, a strange sense of normalcy had settled over her life, but there remained an unresolved curiosity about Blake. He had been her unexpected hero, a presence of calm when everything had spiraled out of control. Plus, she found herself yearning for some adult conversation outside of her work and her responsibilities as a mother.
• It took a moment for her to gather the courage, but she pressed the call button. The phone rang only twice before Blake’s familiar voice greeted her.
• “Charlotte! It’s good to hear from you,” he said, warmth in his tone.
