• The sky was a rich, bruised purple as the sun began to set, sending sweeping shadows across the woodland floor. I’d never felt so tired—physically, emotionally, every way a man might be worn out. And yet, there was no room for repose. Not when the adversary was hiding in every shadow, waiting for us to mess up.
• I glanced across at Ava. She was ministering to Finn, her hands kind as she checked his wounds. She hadn’t stopped moving since the last attack, not even to regain her breath. The tenacity in her eyes was something to witness, and for a moment, I admired her ability to push through the tiredness.
