- "You shouldn't have come here," I said, my voice shaky with both relief and incredulity. In many respects, the guy facing me—my father, the man I believed had deserted me—was a stranger.
- "Did you not agree I wouldn't?" His voice was harsh, almost as though the years had sapped him in more than one capacity. His eyes fixed on mine, and in spite of years of quiet, his stare at me carried familiarity. He had not really departed at all.
- "Why?." Stepping back, I asked, my body still hurting from the tumult all around us. "Why now, after everything??"
