  • The dungeon was cold, but it wasn’t the damp chill in the air that made me shiver; it was just the silence. That oppressive kind of quiet that presses against your ribs until you think your own heartbeat might betray you. I sat on the narrow slab they called a bed, my wrists raw from the ropes, my back pressed against the wall.
  • It had been hours since Selene’s visit. Hours since she looked at me with those silver eyes and told me I’d never see him again no matter how much I wished. I thought I’d be numb by now. But I wasn’t. The ache inside me pulsed like a wound that refused to close and it refused to go.
