• I remembered the conversation I'd had with Mira several days earlier. I had been shocked when she admitted she already knew that Kael had disguised himself as Thorne. The memory of that moment still burned. I'd confronted her in her cottage, demanding answers. She'd simply looked at me with those ancient eyes and said, "Because I knew he wouldn't be successful."
• At the time, I had been angry. Furious, even. She'd kept something from me. Something dangerous. Something that could have cost me everything. But now, as I walked toward her cottage, I realized I no longer had the energy to argue about it.
