Chapter 11 The Ignorant Know No Fear
- The rain was still pouring down heavily. As night fell, the sky was dark, casting a heavy gloom over Streamhaven. The entire city was shrouded in a tense and gloomy atmosphere.
- Maddox remained seated in the big chair at the entrance, his posture commanding and his expression stern.
- Beside him stood Phantom, as straight and still as a spear, ready to serve at any moment.
- By now, David had calmed down. He walked over and stood behind Maddox.
- Phantom glared at him and snapped, "Do you really not know your place? How dare you stand behind the Dragon King? Get out of the way!"
- David was so scared that he started trembling all over, his face turning pale. This man is too intimidating.
- Maddox waved his hand and said, "David, just stand to the side."
- Only then did David nervously move aside. Despite his fear, he couldn't help but wonder who Maddox really was.
- Just then, they heard a noise from below. A group of people in black quickly climbed the mountain and entered the courtyard.
- "My King, are these the Quinns' people? Let me take them out!" Phantom asked.
- Maddox stayed silent. He could tell these people didn't have any killing intent, so they couldn't be from the Quinn family.
- "You've got some nerve, kid, locking up Victor in a dog cage and treating him like that. In all of Streamhaven, only you would dare to do something like this. I don't know if I should call you brave or just plain ignorant!"
- Pearce, the head of the Graces, sighed and then looked up at Maddox, asking, "So, you're the guy called Maddox?"
- "Who are you?" Maddox asked coolly, not bothering to stand up.
- "You're really something, sitting there while our family head came all the way here to help you! Aren't you going to get up and greet him?" one of Pearce's assistants snapped.
- Pearce waved the assistant off and said with a smile, "I'm Pearce, head of the Grace family in Streamhaven."
- "Lila sent you?" Maddox asked, still not bothering to stand up.
- "Yeah, she called me earlier and asked me to come," Pearce said, frowning. It was clear he was becoming displeased.
- If Maddox hadn't known Pearce's identity earlier and didn't get up, that might have been understandable. But now that he clearly knew who Pearce was and still remained seated, it was starting to seem quite disrespectful.
- This young man really has some nerve!
- Pearce was annoyed. As the head of a new big family in Streamhaven, he'd come out in the rain to help, but this guy was being so disrespectful. It was making him mad.
- One of his assistants, fed up with the situation, said, "Sir, this guy seems like an ignorant idi*t. Is it really worth helping him and risking getting on the bad side of the Quinns?"
- Pearce waved his hand and said, "I promised Lila I'd help, so I can't just back out. Even though this guy is rude and arrogant, I'm not someone who breaks my promise."
- "But you saw it yourself. This guy has tortured Mr. Victor and made him look like this. The Quinns won't just let it slide—they're going to want to kill Maddox. And then ... "
- Pearce said firmly, "We have to at least try to help. Unless the Quinns completely turn against us, they'll still respect me a bit. Besides, I only promised to keep him alive. If he ends up with a broken hand or a broken leg, that's not my problem."
- Of course, that was also because he didn't have the power to do more. The Quinns were not someone to mess with.
- The assistant said, "If it's just about keeping him alive, there might still be a chance. But once the Quinns show up, this Maddox is going to face a terrible fate, probably a hundred times worse than Victor's. He'll be better off dead."
- Pearce shook his head and sighed, clearly feeling helpless. The Graces, after all, were still weaker than the Quinns.
- Seeing this, Phantom found it amusing. He looked down and asked, "My King, what do we do now?"
- "Wait." Maddox said coldly.
- "Understood!" Phantom stood still, like a spear, not moving an inch.
- Pearce suddenly waved his hand and said, "First, get Victor out of the dog cage. If Malcolm shows up and sees this, even my reputation won't help us."
- Two men in black immediately went over to the dog cage. By now, Victor was barely conscious, unable to speak, only whimpering and moaning.
- "How dare you! Without orders, who gave you the right to let him out?" Phantom shouted angrily.
- The two men in black were surprised and looked over at Pearce.
- Pearce was caught off guard too. After a moment, he gave a wry smile and said, "Okay, okay. Looks like the ignorant know no fear. Since it's come to this, I can't promise what'll happen to Maddox."
