• Without looking back, she returned to the big house, going straight to her room and sitting down at her dressing table.
• He looked in the mirror and didn't recognize himself anymore. The blue eyes were lifeless. Blood coursed through her veins, but she was dead inside. He took a pair of scissors and cut the long strands, leaving them in a length just above his shoulders. He looked at the hair in his hands and felt lighter, as if at that moment he was getting rid of all the evil that had befallen him. That was the new Sarah: stripped of pity and feelings.
• The girl changed clothes, determined to have dinner with the Mackersons that night. She surprised everyone when she appeared at the table, sitting a little apart from the others. He helped himself, in a mechanical way, to what was offered. She felt all eyes on her, but she didn't look in anyone's direction.
