Chapter 7 Mommy Was Looked Down Upon

  • Frederick's gaze was sharp and serene, providing a powerful sense of oppression without uttering a single word.
  • He had never met her before, but during their brief interaction, he had indeed developed a liking for the way she interacted and dealt with people.
  • Frederick had previously investigated her. Despite only having started her medical studies halfway, in a short span of six years, she had learned under Caseareo and began treating patients. The number of successful treatments she had performed was countless. However, there was always a risk of the unexpected. He only had one heir, Nathan. If this high-stakes gamble failed, what he stood to lose was his grandson's life.
  • Though Seamus, brought by Belinda, didn't express full confidence verbally, he had been practicing medicine for a long time and had extensive knowledge and experience. It wasn't necessarily true that he was without a solution.
  • As Belinda noticed Frederick's hesitation, her eyes flickered with cunning, and a cold smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She asked pointedly, “Dr. Lynch, you diagnosed Nathan's poisoning so swiftly. Are you absolutely certain of your diagnosis?”
  • Seamus stealthily exchanged a glance with her, immediately displaying an expression of indignation. “Of course, I've been practicing medicine for a solid forty-five years, and I've seen more patients than the amount of food you've eaten! Old Mr. Quille, in medicine, experience is key. I don't know about the medical skills of this person you've invited, but given her youth, I fear she hasn't seen many critically ill patients.”
  • At this point, he noticed a subtle change in the old man's gaze. Without missing a beat, he continued to discredit Charlotte fervently. “How many years have you studied medicine? How many patients have you seen? To boast so shamelessly here is nothing short of a disgrace to the medical profession!”
  • Clearly, these words were intended for Frederick. He meant to undermine the man's trust in Charlotte.
  • On the other hand, his efforts were motivated primarily by money and, secondly, by his genuine contempt for Charlotte, the so-called heir of Caesarea.
  • How old is she? A mere young girl daring to act brazenly in front of me, a miracle doctor?
  • Thus, his words were a blend of truth and fiction, but his emotions were incredibly sincere.
  • Charlotte frowned, and she noticed that Frederick was swayed by the persuasive duet between the two. She couldn't help but give a cold, cynical laugh, saying icily, “Oh, Belinda, you're showing your true colors a bit too much, aren't you? As the one who shared a bed with Mr. Quille, you failed to notice his unusual state. The poison would take a full month to render its victim comatose, during which the patient would exhibit distinct symptoms of dizziness and chest tightness. Given the wealth of the Quille family, you should not have let the illness progress to this extent.”
  • Charlotte narrowed her eyes, her voice sharp like a dagger, piercing the hearts of those present. “It's one thing that you didn't notice his illness, but why is it that the miracle doctor you invited chose to arrive exactly when Old Mr. Quille invited me? Are there really such coincidences in the world?”
  • Charlotte was intently fixated on Belinda's face. With a cold smirk, she began to stride toward her. Every step she took seemed to elicit another bead of cold sweat on Belinda's forehead.
  • The expressions on the faces of those present varied greatly. As her words echoed, their thoughts inevitably began to wander. This was just too much of a coincidence.
  • Everyone's gaze shifted toward Belinda.
  • At that moment, Belinda's face turned pale. She quickly turned to Frederick and urgently retorted, “Grandpa, don't listen to her nonsense. Yes, I didn't notice Nathan's condition in time, but Grandpa, don't you know how I feel about Nathan? I love him so much, and it's breaking my heart. It's just that he usually doesn't allow me to visit often, so...”
  • Sorrow filled Belinda's eyes, making her appear pitifully delicate. She lamented, “Ever since I found out about Nathan's condition, I've been searching day and night for help. Dr. Lynch has been out of the public eye for many years, and it was only recently that I managed to track him down. It took a great deal of effort to convince him to come here!”
  • As Belinda spoke, tears slid down her cheeks. “Grandpa, believe in me.”
  • When Charlotte heard her mention that Nathan didn't allow her to visit often, she couldn't help but glance at her. She hadn't expected that Belinda still hadn't won over Nathan's heart even after six years. Unintentionally, a hint of pity emerged in her eyes.
  • Upon seeing the situation, Belinda realized that she had completely lost her pride in front of this despicable person. She was so furious that she felt dizzy, and she snapped, “Charlotte, don't assume everyone is as vile as you! Don't change the subject when Dr. Lynch is questioning your qualifications!”
  • No sooner had the words been spoken than Frederick's gaze toward Charlotte took on an added measure of seriousness.
  • Charlotte met his gaze with a calm countenance. Over the years, she had faced countless questions and skepticism, always managing to maintain her composure. However, her little ones couldn't hold back any longer.
  • Anthony pursed his lips, his youthful, handsome face full of seriousness. He earnestly said, “Old Mr. Quille, wasn't it because of your friendship that Mr. Caseareo sent Mommy to treat Mr. Quille's illness? Doesn't that even warrant basic trust?”
  • As Frederick discerned the implications in his words, his eyes flickered, avoiding eye contact.
  • Bennett walked up to Seamus, his cheeks puffed up in frustration. In his babyish voice, he questioned the old man standing before him.
  • “Mr. Caseareo once mentioned that my mommy's abilities have already surpassed his own. Are you as formidable as Mr. Caseareo?”
  • Seamus was utterly exasperated by this little rascal on the spot.
  • Of course, he couldn't compare to Caseareo. He couldn't even catch up if he were on horseback.
  • He was so furious that he could hardly contain himself. He abruptly turned to Frederick and declared, “Old Mr. Quille, throughout my career as a doctor, I haven't treated every illness, nor have I been persuaded to treat just anyone! I agreed to treat Mr. Quille's illness out of respect for Belinda, but I was met with such disrespect upon my arrival! I refuse to treat this illness any longer!”
  • He was so upset that he was about to storm off when Frederick furrowed his brows and raised his hand to stop him. “Dr. Lynch, please wait a moment.”
  • His gaze was intense, and he asked with a serious tone, “You mentioned earlier that Nathan was poisoned with an incurable toxin and that only Mr. Caseareo could save him. However, Charlotte is the disciple of Mr. Caseareo, yet you question her abilities. Could it be that you have a cure?”
  • Seamus' face flushed with the inquiry. He was certain he had no cure. However, if he were to leave now, all his efforts would have been in vain.
  • He turned around, resolved, and said, “I won't beat around the bush; it's true that this poison is indeed incurable. However, it doesn't mean I'm entirely out of options. A few years ago, I encountered a patient suffering from this kind of poison, and I successfully treated them. What I said earlier about only Mr. Caseareo being able to save him was merely because Mr. Caseareo's medical expertise is profoundly deeper than mine, and I lacked full confidence. That's all. But under these circumstances, it would be better to let me try instead of having her treat him! I can't stand people who harm others under the guise of being a doctor.”
  • “Indeed, Grandpa.” Belinda's mind sparked with an idea, feigning concern as he suggested, “Nathan's illness is not something we can afford to delay. Let's give Dr. Lynch a chance to try his hand.”
  • They said they were just testing it out, but both Belinda and Seamus understood they were actually trying to delay Nathan's illness.
  • Even if Frederick managed to invite Caseareo, it would still be too late for the latter to change anything.
  • When the time comes, we'll just blame it on Dr. Caseareo.
  • After some thought, Frederick sighed and said, “Dr. Lynch, I'll leave Nathan in your care for now.”
  • Then, he turned his gaze toward Charlotte and apologetically said, “Ms. Sherrod, I'm sorry, but I hope you can understand.”
  • Upon hearing those words, Charlotte didn't want to make herself feel awkward anymore. She nodded and turned to leave, but Frederick called her back. Then, he signaled to the butler at the door.
  • The butler, catching his gaze, stepped forward and led Belinda and Seamus outside.
  • Frederick spoke gently. “Ms. Sherrod, please hold on a moment. I have more to say.”
  • Charlotte looked at him, puzzled. She wasn't sure what he was going to say, but she felt a bit irritated. The greatest benefit she derived from healing Nathan was earning the affection of the two children, which would make it easier for her to coax them away.
  • It seemed, at this point, she needed to consider other approaches.
