Chapter 6 Joshua
- “Crap. You finally answered my call.”
- “Watch your mouth, Josh. I’m your grandfather.”
- “I’ve called you a hundred times since this afternoon.”
- “There’s no signal twenty-four hours a day here. This cabin is too remote and far from civilization.”
- “When are you coming back to Chicago?”
- “Why? Didn't you say you didn't need me anymore?”
- Damn old man. If he wasn’t my grandfather, I wouldn’t hesitate to curse him with the filthiest curses.
- “You just ruined my life, Grandpa.”
- “Where’s my granddaughter-in-law? I want to say hello to her.”
- “She’s dead.”
- “Dead? Are you kidding me? Didn’t you just marry her this morning? Don’t try to lie to me, Josh.”
- I massaged my aching temples. The last thing I wanted right now was to joke around with my grandfather. I wasn’t in the mood for jokes at all.
- I jumped out of my car and slammed the door shut. I finally managed to clean up some of the mess that had happened today and drove home, where my wife was waiting for me.
- Tch. Wife?
- The beach house was pitch black except for the room on the second floor, which was my room. What would I expect? There was no way she would be waiting for me in her sexy lingerie and expecting to spend the first night with me. Not a chance in hell.
- “Josh, what happened?”
- “My wedding turned into a bloodbath because of my ex-fiancée. Alana Calonzo. You remember that sly woman, right? You were the one who set me up with her.”
- “Yeah, I remember her. She was madly in love with you.”
- “I didn’t love her, and I was disgusted by her. That creepy widow sent her men to my wedding and shot my future wife dead. Luckily, I had a spare bride available for me to marry today. So, I’m married, just like you wanted.”
- I pushed the door of the house open. My left hand gripped the gun tightly, in case someone suddenly attacked me. But after a few seconds, nothing happened. The house was very quiet. My bride didn't seem to be as wild as I thought. At least, she didn't try to break down my bedroom door to escape from this house. She was still in my room, waiting for me in anger because I left her without explanation.
- “Congratulations on your wedding, son. When can I meet my granddaughter-in-law?”
- “I don’t know. I still have a lot to do here. Half of my men died in the shootout this afternoon. I have to silence the police so they don’t interfere in my affairs. Ten of our colleagues died in the shootout. We really have a lot of homework to do.”
- “Not us, but you. Don’t you want to take over the organization? You have to solve your problems without me.”
- Fuck!
- My hands itched to shoot him in the head. Unfortunately, family came first. No matter how much I hated my family members, I couldn't kill them.
- Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
- “Yeah, that’s funny. You were the one who first came up with the crazy idea of setting me up with Alana. You tried to lick Diego Calonzo’s damn ass using me.”
- “Son, the marriage is good for strengthening our relationship with the Sicilian mafia. They have great influence in Europe. We need them to expand into their territory.”
- “Yes, but don’t ever use me as bait for your crazy plan. You can throw Brian to Alana. Doesn’t Brian want to have his own throne? He can get the throne for free by marrying Diego’s eldest daughter.”
- “Unfortunately, Diego only wants you. I’ve brought Brian to meet him. Diego has no interest in him at all.”
- The corner of my lips twitched proudly. Even Diego Calonzo knew that my idiot cousin couldn’t occupy the throne. Brian was always jealous of me and accused our Grandpa of playing favorites for not giving him the throne in the organization. I think Grandpa knew Brian was not fit to lead this organization.
- “I don’t care about Brian. But you have to help me talk to Diego. His daughter has done so much damage. She’s just raising a war flag against me. You don’t want me to send a retaliatory attack to Sicily, do you?”
- “I’ll talk to Diego. Does he know about the attack or is it all Alana’s doing?”
- “Good. And one more thing, it seems like there is a traitor among us. No one knows about my wedding except our people, but Alana knows about it. You understand what I mean, right?”
- “Yeah, it’s hard to keep our people straight. You had better be careful.”
- “I’ve always been careful. That bloodshed wouldn’t have happened if you had abolished the rule of family above all else.”
- “What do you mean, son? Are you accusing Brian of being the mastermind behind the chaos?”
- “He’s the only one who wants to overthrow me from my position. If he’s proven to be in cahoots with Alana, I won’t hesitate to punish him or even kill him. He’s a parasite. He’s no use to the organization at all.”
- “Do whatever you think is right, son. You’re the leader now.”
- “Does that mean I can get rid of that bastard?”
- “Brian is family. Be nice to him.”
- Dammit. I’m not going to be nice to that damn rat.
- “Should I send you a wedding gift?”
- Tsk, that was just another tactic of Grandpa's to change the subject. I didn't want to talk about Brian anymore either.
- “No. I just want you to bless my marriage with my wife.”
- “What’s the name of the lucky woman?”
- Tch. Lucky he said?
- There was no lucky woman who married Joshua Craig Lident. I'm sure she agreed.
- I pushed open my bedroom door slowly. I didn’t hear any sound from outside, which made me a little worried and also alert. I didn’t expect to see any more bodies tonight because I was sick of seeing the bodies strewn all over the church floor. The woman seemed tough enough and wouldn’t try to kill herself just because I forced her to marry me.
- “Fiona. Fiona Osborn Craig Lident.”
- The name slipped out of my lips strangely.
- I was relieved that she didn’t try to kill herself. My wife was sleeping. She was still wearing her white dress that was stained with the bastard’s blood. She was curled up like a fetus in the middle of the bed. It didn’t seem like she was trying to trick me by pretending to be asleep. She was really sleeping. Her breath was moving up and down regularly and both of her eyes were tightly closed. Her lips moved slightly, as if she was saying something in her sleep, but I couldn't make out the words clearly.
- Maybe she was dreaming. I hope the incident this morning at the church didn't traumatize her.
- "Beautiful name. I'm sure the woman is as beautiful as her name. God bless your marriage and your wife. Be happy, son. You're too serious about your job. You need a woman in your life."
- "I've had enough women in my life."
- "Not bitches like the ones you've slept with all this time. A real woman who will give you offspring."
- Another piece of shit.
- I hated it when Grandpa started to interfere in my personal life. In the end, he just wanted to tell me to have an heir to inherit this family business.
- "I'm sure your parents would be proud of you if they were still here with us."
- "I have to go. This is my first night with my wife."
- "Tsk, you young man. You make me miss Marry."
- "May God bless the souls of Grandma and my parents in heaven."
- "Good night. Have fun with your bride, son."
- I hung up the phone and put it on the bedside table along with my two guns. If Alana dared to send her soldiers here to mess with me and my wife again, I would find her in Sicily and shoot her in the head with my favorite gun. She had gone too far. She not only shot Katherine, but also several of my important colleagues. I had to calm their families who were angry about the shooting incident this morning. They were in my organization because they trusted me as a leader. And after the shooting incident this morning, they began to doubt their trust in me.
- Fuck Alana.
- She would pay dearly for her behavior today. But I didn't need to tell grandpa. I would take care of Alana.
