Chapter 6 Marrying Into The Langford Family 6

  • “About you marrying into the Langford family, of course,” said Mathilda. Seeing Veronica's confused look, the old lady explained, “The Langford family only has one male heir. You should know that my grandson has been in a coma for two years after getting involved in an accident. Don't you worry, though, for he will wake up after you marry him!”
  • After hearing what Mathilda had to say, Veronica knitted her brows. “But this is...” Against my wishes. Veronica bit back her words and tried to be tactful. “This is too sudden. I need to consider it carefully.”
  • Hilary offered a grin. “Veronica, the Langford family is a prominent family. Madam Mathilda is here personally to discuss your marriage. You should be honored to get chosen to be Mr. Langford's bride.”
  • Honored?
  • Veronica's gaze landed on Hilary, who had a wide grin on her face.
  • She held her frustration back upon seeing the helpless look in Richard's gaze. Perhaps they had already come to a decision and only informed me in the end.
  • At the thought of Seth and Violet, Veronica took a deep breath. “Alright. I'll marry Mr. Langford, then.”
  • The rest promptly stared at her. Mathilda patted her hand and took out a jewelry box from her bag. Under everyone's surprised gazes, she opened the box slowly.
  • There was a flawless jade bracelet nestling in the box, sparkling under the light.
  • “What an exquisite jade bracelet!” Hilary exclaimed as jealousy glinted in her eyes. She told Veronica, “Look at how Madam Mathilda adores you!”
  • “Veronica, here, I'll put it on for you.” Mathilda then helped her to put on the bracelet before nodding happily. “It's very pretty!”
  • “This is Mom's favorite jewelry. You're really lucky, Veronica.” Franklin's wife, Willow Deluna, spoke up. Mathilda released her grip on Veronica's hand and announced, “Alright, then. A few days later, I shall ask someone to deliver the betrothal gift. They shall get married on October 9, as that's an auspicious date!”
  • Mathilda made it sound like she had just come up with that date, but Veronica knew they had decided on the date before coming here.
  • With that, the guests rose to their feet and exchanged greetings before bidding the Savilles goodbye. Mathilda was helped out of the door by Franklin's wife.
  • Franklin had a word with Richard and gave a final nod. He stared at Veronica for a while before turning to leave.
  • Soon, the living room was empty save for the Savilles. Hilary turned to glare at Veronica. “You're quite lucky, huh? I can't believe you're going to be Mrs. Langford soon.”
  • “If you think that it's a good thing, feel free to ask Violet to take my place. I don't mind,” came Veronica's cool reply.
  • “You...” Hilary was about to retort, but Richard had returned home after sending the guests off. She stopped in time and stormed upstairs.
  • “Veronica...” Richard seemed hesitant to continue speaking. Guilt flashed across his eyes.
  • Veronica reassured her father. “Dad, you don't have to explain. I'm willing to marry him. Besides, the Langford family is a prominent family in Coldbridge, so I won't suffer any losses by marrying their heir.”
  • Richard seemed torn as he said, “I had no idea they will come to ask for your hand in marriage. The company isn't doing well recently...” He trailed off and rubbed his hands together ruefully.
