Chapter 12 Marrying Into The Langford Family 12

  • In the VIP ward of Coldbridge Hospital.
  • “No, don't touch me!” Veronica waved her hands around wildly as tears rolled down her cheeks in despair.
  • “Mom, save me! Don't leave me alone, Mom!”
  • The sight of his daughter's nightmare went straight to Richard's heart like an iron shard. Tears welled up in his eyes as he grabbed her hands and choked out, “Veronica, it was all my fault. I didn't take good care of you and caused you to get hurt.”
  • He had always felt guilty toward Veronica as he was busy with work and rarely had time for her. As Veronica was an obedient child, he thought she had a great childhood.
  • Richard felt his heart being sliced into pieces when he saw Veronica curling herself into a ball on the bed. Choking on his breath, he buried his face in her hand and sobbed quietly.
  • In a daze, Veronica heard someone sobbing beside her. Wondering who it was, she opened her eyes and saw her father sobbing into her palm.
  • She parted her lips to call him, “Dad.”
  • Upon hearing her voice, Richard jolted up. He couldn't even be bothered to wipe away his tears as he exclaimed, “Veronica, you're awake!”
  • “Dad, what happened? Why are you crying?”
  • “They're tears of joy. I'm glad that you've regained consciousness,” Richard replied as he wiped his tears away hastily.
  • Veronica was certain that he was crying out of guilt. The only time she had ever seen him shed tears was during her mom's accident.
  • “Dad, I'm fine. Don't worry. I'll be out of the hospital in a few days,” she comforted him with a warm smile.
  • As Veronica seemed to be in good spirits, Richard cheered up. He parted his lips to ask her about last night's event but thought the better of it.
  • Veronica noticed her father's hesitance. She didn't want him to worry, so she decided to tell him everything.
  • “Dad, do you know who sent me to the hospital?” she queried.
  • “No, I don't. I only found out when the hospital called and told me you've been admitted. But one thing's for sure is that the one who saved you must know who we are since the hospital called my phone directly.”
  • Richard didn't hide his surprise. If it was someone they knew, they would've left a name. Clearly, that person didn't want them to know their identity.
  • “Veronica, since the person doesn't want us to know who they are, we don't have to get to the bottom of it. You should rest. I'm going to give Hilary a call.”
  • As Richard's figure disappeared from sight, Veronica couldn't help but berate herself for letting her father worry.
  • Who was the person who saved me? If I wasn't mistaken, it was a masked man who saved me. Who could he be?
  • “Hello, Hilary. Veronica is in the hospital. Ask Lydia to prepare some chicken soup for her. I'm going to ask someone to pick it up later,” Richard instructed.
  • “I'm busy,” came Hilary's impatient reply. “I'm out shopping with my friends. You should call our house number.”
  • “Alright. I'll do that.”
  • After hanging up, Richard raised his head and gazed at the sky. Did I really do the right thing by marrying Hilary back then?
