- I glance back at Hasan as I step out of the office, hoping for some kind of signal or shared understanding—the kind that tells me he’s just as worried as I am about all this. But there’s nothing. Just that same irritating calm on his face, like he’s watching a rerun of a show he’s already memorized.
- Mom doesn’t say a word as we walk down the corridor. Luckily, the hallway is deserted; everyone is in class. Her heels click against the tiles with the precision of a metronome, but each step sounds like a countdown to something worse. She doesn’t even look at me.
