Chapter 395 Climb the Wall

  • “This is the quality of your HQ security?” Maxwell York raised a brow. The guard’s face soured in a heartbeat. “Kid, I’m following protocol. Who are you calling low-class?” “Rules are rules. No appointment? Make one, then come back. Now, scram.” He even gripped the baton at his waist, trying to look tough. Maxwell frowned and was about to make a move, but Daphne Lewis grabbed his arm. “Get lost back to whatever hole you crawled out of, you two hillbillies. Don’t block people here.” The guard sneered again. Maxwell shot him a cold glance. Meeting Maxwell’s eyes, the guard felt a chill cut right through him, like a knife between the shoulder blades. He shivered without meaning to. Daphne led Maxwell across the street to wait. Only after Maxwell walked away did that icy feeling peel off the guard’s back. “That was weird.” He scratched his head, baffled how a single look could make him feel that way. Just then, a Bentley rolled out from the HQ parking lot. The security at the gate bent almost ninety degrees, bowing as he called out, loud and respectful, “Take care, Mr. Wan!” Daphne was across the street, but she heard it clearly. The guard wasn’t quiet—he clearly wanted whoever was in the car to notice. Daphne’s eyes lit up. Mr. Wan? How many people at HQ get called that? It’s either a general manager, a director, or the president. A general manager rarely drives a Bentley. Odds are, that’s the president. Without thinking, Daphne dashed across the road. “Hey, babe, watch the cars!” Maxwell let out a helpless laugh. Luckily, traffic was light. Even if there was danger, Maxwell could pull her out, but this was still reckless. He hurried after her and saw Daphne spread her arms in front of the Bentley. The car stopped hard at the parking exit. The driver stuck his head out the window. “Are you nuts?” “Where’d this maniac come from?!” He swore, pissed, because she’d popped up out of nowhere. He’d almost hit her. Daphne ignored the cursing and stepped up fast. “I’m really sorry. I had no choice. I’m Daphne Lewis, director of the Jegland branch of Haier. I used to be the market supervision lead at the Northbury branch. I’d like to speak to Mr. Wan about something—can I?” She rolled out her credentials, worried she wasn’t important enough to get his attention, so she even mentioned her previous position at the Northbury branch. In the back seat, a dignified middle-aged man stepped out. Daphne hurried over, anxious. “Hello, Mr. Wan. I want to talk to you about workers’ wages...” She laid out everything going on at the Jegland branch, then asked why they were doing it this way. Mr. Wan listened quietly, then climbed back into the car with a blank face, giving no response at all. “Let’s go.” He said it flat, and the driver pulled around Daphne and left. Daphne panicked. Why wouldn’t he even talk to her? “Mr. Wan! Mr. Wan...” She tried to follow, but Maxwell stopped her. “We’ll grab a cab and tail them.” He waved down a taxi right away. “Follow that Bentley.” Maxwell tossed a handful of red bills onto the front seat. The driver’s eyes lit up. He scooped the cash and peeled out without a word. Daphne still looked tense. Maxwell called Ning Jianrong. “Who’s the new president?” “Wan Hongzhen. Big-name entrepreneur. He runs several large groups.” “That’s all I know,” Ning said. Wan had just taken office, and Ning had been sent overseas. He hadn’t dug deeper. Maxwell hung up and told Daphne what he’d learned. “Wan Hongzhen—then that was definitely Mr. Wan just now. We got the right guy.” Daphne brightened a little. “But he just ignored me.” She sounded defeated. The taxi followed them to a private club. Maxwell and Daphne got out. Wan Hongzhen’s car had already driven inside. “Private club. No entry,” the security at the door said. Maxwell frowned. They didn’t have beef with these guards. Beating them up would be a bad look. They walked a bit away. Daphne asked, helpless, “So how do we get in?” Maxwell scanned the perimeter, eyes glinting. “We climb the wall.” Daphne blinked. Climb the wall?
