  • I barely registered Leandro's voice as he spoke. His hands came to rest on my shoulders, steadying me, his head lowering to mine in an effort to block the sight of the body sprawled in the corridor. But the image had already seared into my memory. Blood roared in my ears like an unforgiving tide. My stomach twisted violently.
  • I dropped my gaze to my hands, half-expecting to see them stained, crackling with some dark power. But they looked normal. Too normal. As if nothing had happened.
