Chapter 723 Journey into the Mausoleum (VII)

  • “So this is the heart of the First Emperor’s tomb?”
  • The moment Lewis stepped through the stone gate, he knew this was the final line of defense in the underground palace. The chamber was the size of two soccer fields. Oil lamps burned every few yards, flooding the entire space with light. A white river wrapped around the perimeter, and in the dead center floated a jade pavilion in midair. A ninety-nine-step staircase of white marble gleamed like polished bone. Most outrageous of all, that skyborne pavilion had no support columns at all, which left Lewis staring, dumbstruck.
  • Above the pavilion, a canopy of stars stretched wide. Pinpricks of light flickered across the vault, making you feel like you’d stepped into deep space. Lewis stood there, slack-faced, because the scale of this underground palace blew past anything he’d ever imagined.
