Chapter 24 No Going Back

• The darkness hits so fast that for one sickening second I lose all sense of space.
• The elevator jerks beneath my feet with a violent shudder, and my shoulder slams into the metal wall. Cold steel bites through the thin fabric of my blouse. My breath catches hard in my throat. The air feels sealed, heavy, wrong. It feels as though the walls have moved closer in a single instant.
• “Emily.” Victor’s voice cuts through the dark, low and controlled. I hear him shift toward me, the scrape of his shoes sharp in the silence. “Are you ok?”
