Chapter 5 Fortune Favours the Bold

  • Leo gritted his teeth and said, "Yes, it's Madam Miriam. You didn't have a woman by your side; your mother thought you had health issues, so she privately asked me to arrange a suitable woman."
  • He fell to his knees with a thud, almost crying to show his loyalty. Leo pleaded, "Boss, you have to believe me! I've always been loyal to you!"
  • Unexpectedly, Henry's eyes grew colder. He screamed, "Don't you dare address her as madam! She has no right to meddle in my life!"
  • Leo bowed his head and dared not argue. He simply answered, "Yes, Boss."
  • "A suitable woman? Haha," Henry sneered. "Who told you she was suitable? I must be blind to fancy such a woman! Fire her immediately!"
  • "Yes, Boss!"
  • Freya had just returned to the secretariat when she received a call from HR about her termination.
  • As she left Motionbridge Corporation, she was internally cursing her luck. "Henry, you jinx! Every time I run into you, I end up in a mess!"
  • She didn't notice a black car passing by the company; it suddenly stopped and began to tail the bus she boarded.
  • As Freya got off the bus, she saw Joan, the maid, walking with the twins back to the apartment.
  • When she saw her bright and smart twins, Freya's frustration melted away. She waved at them and called out, "Jasmine! Winston!"
  • "Mommy!"
  • "Mommy!"
  • The twins, hearing her voice, ran towards her excitedly.
  • Ignoring their resistance, Freya picked them up, one in each arm. She grumbled as she walked towards Joan, saying, "Oh dear, my two little darlings have grown heavier. My arms are tired!"
  • "Mommy, did you have a good day at work?" Winston wriggled, wanting to get down. He was a big boy now, and he didn't want to be seen being carried by his mom.
  • Jasmine also struggled to get down.
  • Freya set them down. She kissed each other on the cheeks and said with a smile, "When I see you two, it makes everything better. As for work, it depends on luck!"
  • "Mommy, did you get fired again?" Winston asked seriously, looking up at her.
  • Jasmine nodded in agreement.
  • "Sigh! It must be that!"
  • Freya playfully tapped their little noses, feeling a bit guilty as she asked, "What do you mean by again? It's that boss who doesn't recognise my talent, okay? Also, isn't it better that I get to spend more time with you at home?"
  • "Fine, Jasmine and I can take care of you!"
  • Winston reasoned logically before adding, "But you can't always hang out with us kids. You need to find us a father!"
  • "We'll see."
  • Freya brushed them off. She felt the urge to escape. Joan was waiting for them at the apartment entrance, and the maid laughed at the harmonious scene.
  • As they walked home, a stern male voice suddenly called out from behind. "Fae!"
  • Freya froze for a second, then quickly hid the twins behind her and turned to look back.
  • When she saw Bill Lambert, a flood of complex emotions surged in her heart. With a cold expression, she picked up the twins and hurried towards the stairwell.
  • Joan had sensed Freya's tension; she followed and asked worriedly, "What's wrong?"
  • Before Freya could reply, Bill had caught up with them.
  • Breathing heavily, he reached the stairs and said emotionally, "Fae, you finally came back!"
  • His sharp eyes quickly focused on the twins. A gleam of shrewdness flashed in his eyes, and he asked, "These are your children? My grandchildren? Let grandpa hold them."
  • He reached out eagerly, but Freya sidestepped. She set the twins down and instructed Joan to take them home.
  • As the twins went upstairs, Bill's gaze never left them.
  • Freya blocked his view and asked coldly, "How did you find me here? What do you want from me?"
  • "I ... "
  • No one had questioned Bill so harshly before.
  • Though angered, he softened at the thought of his guess. Bill asked kindly, "How can you talk to your father like that? Where have you been these past four years? I've been looking for you.
  • "If I hadn't seen you at Motionbridge today, I wouldn't know you were back in Bosneau and had given me two lovely grandchildren!"
  • "Fae, tell me. Are they ... "
  • "No!"
  • Freya cut him off harshly and said, "After what you did to me four years ago, you're no longer my father! And not their grandfather, either!
  • "The father of my children has nothing to do with you!"
  • Bill argued, "How can it have nothing to do with me?"
  • He got anxious at her words. Bill said, "If you got pregnant in the Jackmans' car, then the Jackmans are responsible!"
  • "Responsible?" Freya laughed coldly, "What if it was old Mr. Lambert? Would you expect him to take responsibility, too? Would you want him to call you father-in-law?"
  • "You brat!"
  • When she brought up Oswald Jackman, Bill's face turned pale. Everyone knew Oswald rose to power with ruthless means.
  • Though his three sons inherited some of his traits, Oswald's reputation for cruelty still made people shiver.
  • If Oswald heard these, Freya and him would be in serious trouble.
  • Bill chided harshly, "Bullshit! Old Mr. Lambert has been a pious man for years! He wouldn't do such a thing!"
  • With a flicker in his eyes, he added, "I just heard today that Jackman Group acquired Motionbridge. You came out of there, so the man that night must be ... "
  • "No, it's not him!" Freya interrupted. When he guessed the truth, she tried to calm her racing heart. "I was just working there. It's not what you think!"
  • "That's right! It's rumoured that Mr. Henry isn't interested in women. He wouldn't be out having a car sex?"
  • Bill quickly analysed and continued, "Then it must be Mr. Eden? He's known as a playboy. I heard he hosted some grand parties recently. Is he the father?"
  • Freya pursed her lips, not wanting to talk.
  • Since Freya said nothing, Bill thought he had guessed right. He felt a mix of excitement and regret.
  • "But Mr. Eden never lacks women, and they are more than willing to have his children. I heard he recently paid off a pregnant woman with a hefty sum. You gave him two children."
  • Freya interrupted with disdain, "What exactly do you want?"
  • As Freya softened her stance, Bill dropped the pretense and went straight to the point. He said, "It's simple; take the kids and ask the Jackmans for benefits. If they refuse, I will expose Mr. Eden's rape of my daughter to the media. These kids are the evidence!"
  • Freya was trembling with rage.
  • Four years ago, her father had sold her to Kelsey Walsh, which had broke her heart.
  • Bill's current scheme to sell her children filled her with hatred.
  • She glared at Bill fiercely and questioned, "Aren't you afraid the Jackmans will kill you secretly if you push them too far?"
  • Bill's eyes flickered with fear but quickly turned greedy. He stated, "Fortune favours the bold! Aside from that, my daughter gave the Jackmans two children. They owe us compensation!"
  • Filled with anger, Freya felt a cold calm wash over her.
  • If Bill caused a scene, the Jackmans wouldn't spare her, and they would take away her children.
  • She couldn't let that happen.
