Chapter 11 Slipping through the Cracks
- "Here are the documents you asked for. Take them and get out." Freya dragged Bill out of the hospital ward. She pulled the papers from her bag and delivered her ultimatum. She wanted nothing more than to be rid of him.
- Bill glanced at the contract, sneering at the meager share of the profits.
- He roared, "What's the meaning of this? Why is the dividend so low? I demand thirty-five percent of the profits. I don't care; you better figure it out, or you'll regret it."
- "You!"
- Freya's vision was blurred with anger. She never imagined her father could be this shameless.
- "I can try to negotiate, but thirty-five percent is impossible. If you push me, you'll get nothing. I'm not someone you can bully easily. We can both go down, if that's what you want. Now get out!"
- Freya shoved Bill out of the hospital room, and her heart pounded with anxiety.
- Bill's greed was boundless. She needed to find a way to deal with him once and for all.
- Her voice was calm, just like the way she spoke on typical days.
- However, the menace in her words was like a winter chill creeping into Bill's bones, filling him with dread.
- Without sparing him another glance, Freya turned back into the room.
- Inside the hospital ward.
- The twins slept peacefully. Joan watched over them, her concern evident when Freya entered the room. She approached Freya and asked softly, "Are you alright?"
- Freya forced a smile and shook her head. She said, "I'm fine. I'll stay with them. You should get some rest."
- Joan nodded, understanding Freya didn't want to talk about it. She moved to the sofa to rest.
- Freya sat beside the bed and looked at the twins. Her gaze betrayed her worry. She was just trying to scare Bill, but it seemed he might be watching her. She needed to find a new place and move quickly.
- The next day.
- Jasmine hugged Freya's neck, nuzzling affectionately against her, and softly said, "Mommy, I'm all better now. I don't feel sick anymore."
- "Yes, you're very brave," Freya replied, kissing her daughter's cheek. She turned to Winston, who was helping by pouring a glass of water for his sister. Freya gently ruffled his hair.
- "You're doing a great job taking care of your sister, Winston."
- Jasmine lifted her head from Freya's neck and said, "It's what big brother should do!"
- Winston handed over the water with a big smile. He agreed, "Yeah! If I don't take care of you, Mommy won't have time for her dates."
- "Exactly! Finding Daddy is important!"
- Jasmine enthusiastically agreed, her playful and adorable demeanour bringing delight to everyone.
- After completing the discharge procedures, Freya took the twins home first. She bathed them, changed their clothes, and then headed to work.
- She arrived at the office.
- Freya redrafted the documents for the Loop Road commercial area.
- She modified Lambert Group's dividend from five percent to twenty percent. This was a calculated choice by Freya, leaving some room for negotiation even if the change was discovered.
- She printed the revised document and mixed it with the others. Freya intended to bring the documents to Henry and had him sign them all together.
- She hoped she could slip it past him.
- With a hopeful heart, she knocked on the door to the CEO's office. Hearing his response, she walked in. Freya said, "Mr. Jackman, these documents need your signature."
- The man leaned back in his chair with his eyes closed.
- When he heard her voice, his sharp, cold gaze slowly opened and swept coldly towards her. He tapped his fingers on the desk, signalling for her to approach.
- Freya understood. She stepped forward and placed the documents on his desk. Then she stood by and showed no intention of leaving.
- The man raised his eyes. His cold, indifferent gaze silently questions her. Freya met his gaze, feigning calmness, though a flicker of panic flashed through her eyes.
- "Mr. Jackman, once you sign these, I need to deliver them."
- He looked away, picking up the documents and going through them. With his long fingers, he held the pen and signed the first document.
- When he started to put down his signature, Freya exhaled quietly in relief.
- If he kept looking at her like that, she might give herself away.
- She had brought five documents, with the crucial one being the fourth. Watching him sign the third, her nerves began to fray.
- Here it comes! This is the one! Go on! Just sign it like the others!
- Freya wished she could guide his hand herself.
- However ...
- Just as he was about to sign, Henry paused. He lifted his gaze and looked at Freya. A glint of suspicion flickered in his eyes.
- "How's your neighbour's kid doing?"
- Freya petrified. Why is he suddenly interested in my neighbour's child?
- Could he possibly suspect something?
