Chapter 13 Forgiving Her

  • Freya was at a loss for words and overcame a surge of panic. She had no other choice but to resort to this desperate measure, and now she had been caught red-handed! Freya could only hope Henry wouldn't be too angry.
  • If he secretly disposed of her, what would happen to the twins?
  • Henry withdrew his gaze. He lowered his eyes and started to scan through the documents with a cold expression. Henry said, "I have work to do."
  • Freya was left speechless.
  • Is this his way of forgiving me?
  • "Mr. Jackman ... " Freya tried to say something more, but his cold glare made her words change.
  • "Alright, I'll let you get back to work," she stammered.
  • Not daring to stay any longer, Freya quickly gathered her documents and left the room.
  • As she glanced back at the polished, luxurious door and then at the documents in her hand, she suddenly realised the true purpose of Henry's earlier conversation.
  • She smacked her forehead.
  • How could I be so foolish?
  • I should have realised it sooner. Henry is never the type to care about a stranger's family affairs. He was giving me a chance to come clean!
  • Oh my! I am so stupid!
  • As she recalled Henry's attitude, Freya felt a deep sense of remorse and guilt.
  • With this remorse weighing heavily on her, she returned to her desk and looked at the signed documents, unable to feel any joy.
  • With a soft sigh, she pulled out her phone. She unlocked the screen and opened her photo album. The sight of the two adorable little ones in the photos lifted her spirits.
  • "Ms. Lambert," Zoe called out as she approached.
  • "Yes, what is it?" Freya responded. She quickly turned off her phone screen as she noticed Leo standing nearby. Freya said, "Mr. Howard."
  • Did he see anything?
  • She had been so engrossed in looking at the pictures that she hadn't noticed Leo standing right next to her. If he saw Winston's photo, with the boy's striking resemblance to Henry, Leo would definitely get suspicious.
  • Freya's anxiety was palpable. Leo looked at her curiously. He assumed Freya was nervous because he had caught her using her phone during work hours. His tone softened, and he calmly said, "You shouldn't be using your phone during work hours."
  • "Yes, understood. It won't happen again," she responded obediently.
  • Freya had a good attitude in admitting her mistake.
  • Leo said no more and walked away. Freya let out a sigh of relief. Leo's calm demeanour suggested he hadn't seen anything.
  • Zoe chuckled softly and said, "You seem quite relaxed, playing on your phone here."
  • Freya replied with a sour look, "Just taking a quick break amidst the busyness, and I got caught."
  • Since Leo had let it slide, Zoe didn't push the matter. She said, "Just don't let it happen again. Now, help me carry some things."
  • Freya put her phone in her bag and followed Zoe to the elevator. As they watched the floor numbers decrease, Freya asked curiously, "What are we moving?"
  • "Just some supplies for the secretariat," Zoe replied nonchalantly.
  • Freya nodded and fell silent.
  • The elevator dinged as they reached the ground floor. Zoe led Freya to the reception desk, where two medium-sized boxes awaited them. Zoe picked up one, and Freya grabbed the other.
  • As they walked back, Freya wondered what could be inside the boxes. Distracted, she accidentally bumped into someone. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," the person quickly apologised.
  • "It's okay," Freya shook her head and said with a smile.
  • Zoe noticed Freya seemed distracted. She asked, "Did Mr. Jackman scold you?"
  • Zoe's sudden concern surprised Freya. After a brief pause, she replied dejectedly, "Sort of. I made him angry."
  • Zoe nodded silently. Indeed, she wasn't wrong. Their boss was intimidating. That man was ruthless and never showed mercy to women.
  • Suddenly, Zoe leaned in and whispered, "I've heard some interesting rumours about Mr. Jackman recently."
  • Intrigued, Freya asked, "What rumours?"
  • Zoe looked around mysteriously and lowered her voice.
  • "It was just something I heard. Back at the main office, Mr. Jackman had a female personal secretary who tried to use her position to get closer to him. Apparently, one time when Mr. Jackman was drunk, she stripped herself naked and got into his bed."
  • "And guess what Mr. Jackman did?"
  • Zoe raised her eyebrows at Freya with a mischievous smile.
  • What else could his reaction be? A beautiful woman offering herself on a silver platter—of course he'd take her, Freya thought, even though she batted her eyes innocently and feigned curiosity.
  • "What did he do?"
  • "He had Mr. Howard threw her out immediately, and she was blacklisted from every reputable company in the city. None of the good companies would hire her now. Though it might seem harsh, I think he did the right thing."
  • Zoe felt a sense of satisfaction. In her view, women who tried to climb the ranks through such disgraceful means only brought shame upon themselves.
  • Freya was surprised by Henry's harshness.
  • Dismissal was one thing, but blacklisting was a serious matter. It meant she could no longer work at any major company, and even smaller ones would be wary of hiring her.
  • Freya shivered at the thought. She was glad she had run away when she did.
  • "Mr. Jackman is quite decisive, isn't he?" Freya praised with a hint of guilt.
  • Zoe continued, "Yes. After that incident, no one dared to try anything similar again."
  • Well, you'd have to be brave to try, Freya thought to herself.
  • Along the way, Zoe told Freya many things about Henry, though Freya had no idea where she had heard them from.
  • Most of them highlight his cold and ruthless nature. By the time they reached their destination, Freya's earlier guilt about deceiving him had mysteriously vanished.
  • Their conversation came to an abrupt halt when they saw the subject of their discussion approaching. They immediately fell silent, their hearts racing due to panic.
  • How unlucky! I have gotten caught again!
