Chapter 12 Anguish

  • Realizing he couldn't delay any longer, Alessandro removed his jacket to shield Kim from the intense heat and, without hesitation, plunged into the flames, disregarding the risk of burns. Shouting to the bystanders, “Call an ambulance and the firefighters!”
  • His white shirt was being consumed by the flames, but he ignored it and, passing through the fire, reached Kim, whom he covered with the jacket and carried in his arms, trying to protect her from the hungry flames.
  • Entering that room felt like descending into hell itself and that's why, when they came out, Alessandro felt a little relief from the pressure of the heat, which had decreased upon exiting. However, his concern for Kim's unconscious state weighed heavily on him.
  • "The ambulance will arrive in five minutes," one of the guards informs him.
  • "Five minutes is too long! Isn't there a closer option?" Alessandro anxiously asks, gently placing Kim on the ground to assess her condition.
  • Meanwhile, Lucia, who had just arrived, rushed to the scene and realized the gravity of the situation. Seeing Alessandro lightly slapping Kim's face in an attempt to revive her, Lucia's heart clenched in horror.
  • "Kimmi!" she screams horrified as she runs towards Kim with tears clouding her vision.
  • "Miss Parker," the oldest guard in the building, addresses Lucia.
  • "What happened?" Lucia asks, her heart racing with fear.
  • "A fire," one of the neighbors responds, while Alessandro, desperate, tries to revive Kim by lightly tapping her face.
  • "Miss Morgan, wake up. You're safe now," Alessandro murmurs, attempting to sound calm, though his desperation is palpable.
  • "Kimmi, I'm here. Please open your eyes," Lucia pleads, her voice trembling with emotion as she hears the approaching sirens.
  • Shortly after, the paramedics arrive and take Kim away while Alessandro goes with them, followed by Lucia. The firefighters arrive and begin to extinguish the fire while Kim is loaded into the ambulance.
  • "I don't know how long she was in the fire, but they must do everything to save her. She... she's pregnant. Neither of them can afford to be lost," Alessandro says desperately.
  • "The doctors will take care of that. Are you coming with us? You should also attend to your injuries," the paramedic suggests.
  • "My injuries don't matter. Focus on her. And yes, I'm going with you. I would be tormented with worry if I don't know what happens to them," Alessandro replies, then climbs into the ambulance, tossing his car keys to Lucia before the paramedic closes the doors.
  • "Miss Parker, use my car. I'll see you there," he calls out, and then the doors are shut, leaving Lucia standing outside.
  • During the journey, Alessandro shows concern, checking that Kim is really breathing with the oxygen mask. The noise of the ambulance that he hated no longer mattered to him, and he focused only on looking at his secretary, while pleading for everything to turn out well.
  • “I will go to the reception to provide the information. But what worries me is that, in the fire, she may have lost all her personal documents, and perhaps that's why they are having trouble with her care," Lucia comments.
  • "They won't neglect her, and the best doctors will come to attend to her. Just focus on giving her personal information. I'll take care of the rest," Alessandro orders, heading to the director's office to demand that Kim be moved to a VIP room and informing them that her family doctor would come to attend to her.
  • "Mr. Delacroix, we have very competent doctors here," says the director, accompanying him to where Kim is being attended to.
  • "I don't doubt that, but I prefer that she be attended to by the best doctors, not just the competent ones," Alessandro responds as his doctor calls him.
  • "Mr. Delacroix, I am at the hospital, they won't allow me to go where she is. Can you take me to the patient?" Dr. Lewis asks.
  • Alessandro hangs up the call and heads to the exit with the director.
  • "Who dares to hold him back?" Alessandro asks, noticing two security guards blocking his way.
  • "I'm sorry, only the doctors who work here are allowed to enter, and those who are invited by them. But there's no problem with Dr. Lewis. He can enter now," says the director, visibly nervous.
  • The three of them walk towards where Kim is, and it is Dr. Lewis who examines her and orders tests to determine her condition.
  • "I will call Dr. Shepherd, the gynecologist, and she will take care of checking the baby. I will be in charge of the rest," says Dr. Lewis, to which Alessandro nods anxiously.
  • "I can examine her, if you allow me," Lucia intervenes.
  • "I appreciate your help. But I will only be at ease if she is examined by a more experienced gynecologist," Alessandro says, and Lucia nods, stepping back a little.
  • Observing everything from a short distance, Lucia smiles, pleased to see how attentive the wealthy businessman, as she calls him, is to the woman who stole his sperm.
  • "At least, he will be a good father. Although not a good brother-in-law. The man undoubtedly hates us," Lu thinks to herself.
  • Kim is examined and taken to the VIP room, where she receives the best care while remaining unconscious. After conducting tests and administering necessary medications, she slowly begins to regain consciousness, coughing a little, which worries Alessandro.
  • “She…”
  • "That's normal, don't worry, Mr. Delacroix," the doctor assures him.
  • Once Kim stops coughing from the smoke, the first thing she focuses on is Alessandro Delacroix, the CEO who is the father of her child. Fear overwhelms her as she realizes what happened and how angry he must be, but it all dissipates when Alessandro looks at her with concern and whispers, "Everything is fine. Both of you are fine, so don't worry too much. You are both being attended to by the best doctors. Nothing will happen to you," Alessandro promises, and she nods, whispering.
  • "Thank you, Mr. Delacroix."
  • "You don't have to thank me; it is my duty to ensure that both of you are well," he comments, causing Lucia to stifle an excited scream at the magnificent scene she witnesses.
  • "Well, maybe he is a good husband after all," Lucia whispers to herself.
