Chapter 8 The Father
- The confrontation could no longer be avoided.
- Elara stormed into her father’s private study late that night, the heavy oak door slamming behind her. Elias Vale sat behind his massive desk, reviewing documents under the glow of a single lamp. He looked up slowly, his expression calm and observant as always.
- “Elara,” he said quietly. “You should be resting.”
- “I’m done resting.” She marched forward and slammed a folder onto his desk — copies of the brake reports, the mysterious SUV footage, and photos of the man from the funeral and the banquet. “This man was at Damien’s funeral. He was at your banquet. And I know he had something to do with the crash.”
- Elias leaned back in his chair, watching her with that piercing, unreadable gaze. He didn’t deny it. He didn’t speak at all for several long seconds.
- The silence stretched, thick and heavy.
- “You’re not going to say anything?” Elara’s voice rose, sharp with barely contained fury. “My fiancé is dead, and you sit there like you already know why.”
- Elias finally spoke, his tone low and measured. “Some truths are heavier than others, daughter.”
- She laughed bitterly. “Then tell me the truth. Did you have anything to do with Damien’s death?”
- Her father’s eyes never wavered. He studied her face — the anger, the grief, the ice — as if weighing how much she could handle. The tension in the room was suffocating.
- “I did what I believed was necessary,” he said at last, voice steady. “But this is not the time for that conversation.”
- Elara’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. “It is exactly the time.”
- Elias remained seated, quiet and observant, refusing to give her more. The weight of his unspoken secrets pressed down on her like a physical force.
- She turned on her heel and left the study, heart pounding with rage and suspicion.
- The pieces were falling into place.
- And the picture they formed was devastating.
