Chapter 3 Whispers At The Grave
- The rain fell like silent judgment on the day they buried Damien Cross.
- Hundreds of the city’s most powerful figures filled the private cemetery grounds, their black umbrellas creating a sea of darkness beneath the heavy gray sky. The grand mausoleum stood solemn behind the gleaming casket adorned with white lilies and black roses. Damien’s final resting place was as extravagant as his life had been.
- Elara Voss stood motionless at the head of the grave, dressed in a tailored black coat and veil that hid her face from prying eyes. She had not shed a single tear. Not when the priest spoke of eternal love. Not when the casket was slowly lowered into the earth. Not even when the first shovels of dirt fell with a dull thud. Her eyes remained dry, her expression a perfect mask of icy composure.
- The whispers started almost immediately.
- “She hasn’t cried once,” someone murmured behind her.
- “Cold as marble. Poor Damien deserved better than an ice queen.”
- “Voss blood runs frozen. She’s probably already calculating how his death benefits the company.”
- “Heartless. He loved her like a madman, and she can’t even shed a tear.”
- The words washed over Elara like cold wind. She heard every syllable, every cruel speculation. Yet she remained unmoved, her gloved hands clasped tightly in front of her. The heavy wedding ring Damien had forced onto her finger in his dying moments pressed against her skin like a brand.
- As the service continued, her sharp gaze swept across the crowd. Most faces were familiar—business associates wearing false sorrow, distant relatives, and rivals hiding satisfaction behind black veils. But one figure stood out.
- A mysterious man lingered at the far edge of the trees, half-hidden in shadows. Tall and broad-shouldered, he wore a long dark coat and kept his face partially obscured. He wasn’t mingling with the other mourners. Instead, he watched the proceedings with intense focus, his eyes flicking repeatedly toward the casket… and then toward her.
- When Elara’s gaze locked onto him, he didn’t flinch. For a long moment, he stared back. Then, slowly, the corners of his mouth curved into a faint, unsettling smile. He raised a phone to his ear, spoke a few quiet words, and slipped deeper into the wooded area, disappearing from sight.
- A chill unrelated to the rain ran down Elara’s spine. Who was he? What was his connection to Damien? Why did he watch her with such strange interest on the day of her fiancé’s funeral?
- The whispers around her grew louder as the final prayers ended.
- “Not even a flinch… She’s more machine than woman.”
- “Damien was obsessed with her, and this is how she honors him?”
- Elara remained rooted in place long after most guests had departed, staring at the fresh mound of earth. No tears came. Only a deep, frozen resolve settled over her.
- Someone had taken Damien from her. And the mysterious man at the edge of the trees might hold answers.
- The Ice Queen had truly risen.
