Chapter 5 The Unwanted Exile
- Elara arrived in her father’s country on a gray, windswept afternoon.
- The private jet landed smoothly on a private airstrip nestled between rolling hills and distant, mist-covered mountains. She stepped off the plane in a tailored black coat, her posture straight and unyielding. A sleek car waited, its driver silent and efficient.
- She had come only because her grandmother had insisted — almost ordered — her to leave. “Go rediscover your humanity before you become something even I cannot recognize.” Elara had agreed, not out of obedience, but because every corner of her old life now carried Damien’s ghost.
- The drive to the estate was long and quiet. When the car finally pulled up to the sprawling, modern mansion perched on a hill, two men stood waiting on the wide stone steps.
- Her stepbrother, Julian, stepped forward first. Tall and impeccably dressed, he offered a polite but reserved smile. “Elara. Welcome. It’s been a long time.”
- Behind him stood another man — Kael. Broad-shouldered, with calm, observant eyes and an air of quiet strength. He didn’t speak immediately. He simply watched her, as if reading the layers of ice she had wrapped around herself.
- Elara gave them both a cool nod. “I’m here. That’s enough.”
- Julian gestured toward the grand entrance. “Father is looking forward to seeing you. He’s been… quiet about your arrival, but observant as always.”
- Inside, the mansion was elegant and minimalist — vast windows overlooking the valley, dark wood, and subtle luxury. Her father, Elias Vale, was waiting in the main sitting room.
- Elias was a tall, imposing man in his late fifties, with silver threading through his dark hair. He did not rush to embrace her. Instead, he stood by the fireplace, hands clasped behind his back, studying her with quiet, piercing intensity. His gaze lingered on her face, her posture, the faint shadows under her eyes. He said nothing for a long moment.
- “Elara,” he finally spoke, voice low and measured. “You’ve grown into a formidable woman.”
- She met his eyes without flinching. “I had no choice.”
- A faint flicker of something — regret, perhaps — crossed his face, but it was gone quickly. Elias remained quiet, observant, watching her every movement as if searching for cracks in her armor.
- Dinner that evening was tense and subdued. Elias spoke little, asking only surface-level questions about her journey. His silence felt heavier than words. Kael, seated across from her, occasionally glanced her way, his presence steady and calm in contrast to the storm inside her.
- Later, alone in her luxurious suite overlooking the dark valley, Elara stood by the large window, twisting Damien’s ring on her finger. The weight of her new surroundings pressed down on her.
- She had not come here to heal or reconnect with a father she barely knew. She had come to escape memories that refused to die.
- But already, new questions stirred. The mysterious man at the funeral. Her father’s watchful silence. And the quiet persistence in Kael’s gaze.
- Elara turned away from the window, jaw set.
- She would find her answers.
- Even if it meant tearing this new world apart.
