• The east sector’s assembly hall was a dome of concrete and steel, lined with frost at the corners and faint light seeping through reinforced glass. Lucy stood beside Daren near the front row, their breath visible in the chill air. Around them, other soldiers and medics murmured, stamping their boots to keep warm.
• Captain Ildren stood at the front of the room with Officer Devane and several officials. “Today,” the captain announced, his voice carrying over the echo of shifting boots, “marks the creation of the first hybrid-response unit of the Watchers. Nine members — medical, combat, and scout combined. Your goal: secure, sustain, and survive. This is Project Sentinel.”
