• As much as she tried to shake off the sense of dread settling into her body, she just couldn’t help it. The truth is, she needed to answer the call whether she liked it or not. It could be an emergency or something else.
• She took a deep breath and slid across her phone screen, then placed it in her ear immediately. Like her usual routine, she waited for the caller to speak first. This was a routine she had always followed when receiving a call from an unknown number.
• The voice came through. “Hey, dear, ex-wife,” Jackson’s voice sounded rude and annoying. What does he have to say now? Why must he disturb her with calls every damn time?
