Chapter 5 Tradition

  • Chapter 5
  • Tradition
  • Narrated by Amy
  • I run out of the library and go straight to my room.
  • I go in and close the door so I won't be disturbed by anyone.
  • To marry? They must all be crazy. And then with that dude Alexander.
  • I grimace.
  • I'm close to the window, and I see all the vegetation in front of me, this landscape is so beautiful, so calm.
  • And I'm so angry about all this.
  • Knock on the door.
  • Amy: -I don't want to talk to anyone - I yell.
  • Nani: -Amy, it's me.
  • It's my Nani.
  • I run to open my bedroom door and let my dear mistress in.
  • She walks in, I stick my head out the door, and I see that there's no one in the hallway to torment me, I immediately close the door, look at her, and hug her.
  • Amy: -You've seen what my father wants to do to me, Nani! - I say, not holding back anymore and cry.
  • She lets me cry on her shoulder.
  • A little later, Nani pushes me away a little, and she looks at me.
  • Nani: -Come here my girl, come sit down -she says affectionately.
  • We sit on the edge of the bed and Nani sighs.
  • Nani: -Amy - she begins - You know that this is tradition in your families, I don't understand why you are so upset about it. You knew that sooner or later this day would come my dear.
  • Yes, I knew, but I always thought that my father would not force me to marry, much less knew that there was a contract signed for that purpose.
  • Amy: -I always thought my father would break this stupid tradition, he never told me much about it, and then I thought it would never come to fruition - I say.
  • Nani: -I've always heard in this house, that as long as Harrison and Thompson exist, tradition can never be broken Amy.
  • I sigh in disillusionment.
  • Amy: -Have you seen the Harrisons' son? - I ask annoyed.
  • Nani: -Ah I saw - says to Nani all melted - an authentic god.
  • Amy: -NANI - scold - he's a beast that's right - I cross my arms and turn my face to the side.
  • Nani laughs a good laugh.
  • Nani: -What a wonderful beast that happened to you girl.
  • Clear ideas…
  • Narrated by Alexander
  • I leave the library wanting to kill someone.
  • But what the hell was this that just happened?
  • I stride toward my car, I'm fed up with this, and I'm leaving. The party is over for me.
  • I get in the car with all my fury, slam the car door and put my hands on the steering wheel and squeeze so hard my knuckles go white.
  • I lean my head against the steering wheel thinking about all that.
  • "What the hell was going to happen?" - I think.
  • I start the car and start.
  • I stop at a small beach not far from there.
  • I get out of the car and go straight to the beach, I roll up my pants and take my shoes off, I walk along the sand, it calms me down, I'm not sure why, but whenever I feel nervous and I do this, I feel a little better.
  • I start to think about this story, from an early age my parents told me that I couldn't get a girlfriend to marry, I knew the tradition well and I knew that one day I had to marry the one who was promised to me forever.
  • What he didn't know was that the bride would be the daughter of the parents' friend, George Thompson.
  • I had always wondered what my future wife would look like, but I had never imagined that I would be a foul-mouthed, yes, that's what Amy Thompson is, a real foul-mouthed fool.
  • How lucky for me.
  • Charles, the lawyer…
  • Charles entered Mr. George the day after the party.
  • Charles: -Friend George, what kind of face is that? - Said the lawyer as soon as he entered.
  • George huffed in annoyance.
  • George: -Yesterday at the party we talked about the marriage contract with Amy and Alexander.
  • Charles then noticed his friend's bad mood.
  • Charles: -And from your face it didn't go well, right?
  • George jumped to his feet.
  • George: -They hated each other Charles - he said exasperated with his hands in the air.
  • Charles: - And why did they hate each other? - asks Charles.
  • George: - Looks like they had some disagreement in the garden before we introduced them, Alexander called her a monkey because she was hanging from a tree.
  • Charles: -AHAHAHAHAH - the lawyer laughed heartily.
  • George looked at him in surprise.
  • George: -And you laugh Charles? Quite frankly.
  • Charles: -What do you want me to tell you! - he continued to laugh - I'm imagining the scene, Amy carefree as she is, hanging from a tree and Alexander's snob scandalized to see a girl in those preparations, ahahahah sorry George, but I can't help but laugh.
  • Charles was having a great time, but George wasn't enjoying the situation at all, that was going to complicate the contract.
  • George: -Their animosity is going to get in the way of their wedding plans, don't you see that? - says George irritated.
  • Charles: -I see and it was nothing that I hadn't warned you about - said the lawyer friend getting serious - where have you seen, at this point in life, there is a contract to marry two young people? This would really suck.
  • George: -We've talked about this a million times and you keep hitting the same thing for a lifetime - he said as he sat down awkwardly on the couch.
  • Charles: -I continue and I will continue. Have you even been preparing Amy for this? No, you weren't - he accuses.
  • George: -You know I do - he said a little bewildered - I always said that she was engaged and not to get a boyfriend.
  • Charles: -You said that but never seriously, you always said it jokingly, never too seriously. You should have had a serious conversation about it, but instead you left messages here and there. Oh please George, now hang on.
  • George: -Are you sure you really are my friend! - He said, squinting at the lawyer.
  • Charles: - That's what friends are for, telling the truth hurts or not.
  • They were silent for a few moments.
  • Charles: -And have you spoken to her after that? - asks Charles.
  • George: -Not yet - he said quietly looking to the side.
  • Charles: -Thank God George, what are you waiting for?? Throw the bomb and run away? scolded Charles.
