Chapter 6 What Vienna Knows

  • Here's the thing about secrets. They don't actually go away just because you moved four hundred miles and changed your zip code. They just wait.
  • Mine had been waiting since junior year of high school, and I hadn't told a single person at this school, not even Priya, not in three years of late-night confessions and shared clothes and every other intimate thing roommates end up trading. I'd built a wall around it so total that I'd almost convinced myself it happened to a different girl entirely, some earlier, softer version of me I'd left behind on purpose.
  • Vienna knew it anyway, because Vienna and I had gone to the same summer program the year before college three weeks at a culinary intensive upstate, forty kids from all over the state crammed into dorms, and we'd been friendly then, actually friendly, in that fast intense way you get close to someone when you're both away from home for the first time. I'd told her things that summer I hadn't told anyone. I hadn't known, back then, that friendliness could be filed away and used as ammunition three years later.
