Chapter 8 Scared
- Serena's P. O. V
- “Who was that man?” Alessandro asked as I finished talking with the ‘suit’ man.
- I ignored him and walked towards the ward.
- “Rena, answer me” He stopped in front of me, blocking my way.
- I took in a deep breath, stared at his face before speaking slowly,
- “I know I can't say you have no right to question me, considering the fact that you've helped my family a whole lot . So much that I can say, I owe you my life. I promise to pay you back everything you've given to us. Thank you very much but I can't answer you now”.
- It was a decision I made on my own for the betterment of every one. At least we wouldn't burden him with our wants and needs any more.
- So why tell him?
- I walked past him and into the ward. I closed the door behind me and breathed a sigh of relief.
- Was I too rude right now? That was the only way I could think about to refuse him.
- I walked over to the couch and sat down, recalling everything the ‘suit’ man said.
- I had only three days to pack up. The more I thought about the decision I made, the more certain I was that it was a good but painful one .
- I can finally pay up all the debt that was pending. A bitter smile spread across my face.
- My eyes teared up as I stared at my mom and sister, I was going to be away from them for a year. It was so sad!.
- I thought back to what I said to Alessandro. I felt even more sad,we were probably not meant to be together.
- He may even get married… to that girl before I get back.
- Tears slid down my face and my heart began hurting again .
- I could vividly imagine him with that girl in their wedding outfit and probably….. a child will come after.
- I rushed to the bathroom to cry. I felt too sad.
- Why did things have to go this way?
- Why did my father have to leave so many debts for us to pay?
- Why can't I end up with the one I love?
- Why did I have to sacrifice my innocence in the most gruesome way ever?
- My breathing became irregular as my sobs turn into a painful cry.
- I was going to miss them all. Why did things have to turn out like this?
- ‘Its fine, you're doing it for their own good’ a voice in my head spoke.
- Its fine
- Everything will be fine
- If it wasn't meant to be, then it wasn't meant to be.
- I cleaned my tears and washed my face again before walking back into the ward.
- “Sister, where you crying? Your eyes are red” Isabella was already up
- “Crying? Of course I wasn't. Something came into my eyes. I went to go wash it out” I lied.
- “Sister, it's been long you read me the bible” Isabella said while trying to tie her hair in a bun.
- I walked up to her and helped her tie it into a bun.
- “Yeah, it has been really long. I would read it to you today, besides are you hungry?”
- “Of course, I'm very hungry”
- I walked to the table besides my mum's and carried the food flask.
- “Here, have this”I placed the food flask on the table beside Isabella's bed.
- “Eat up” I sat down beside her as she opened the food flask.
- “Chicken Adabo? And curry rice? This must be brother Alessandro's doing, right?” she asked with a big grin on her face
- “Yes, it's his doing” I answered with a straight face.
- “I knew it! You know what my biggest wish is?” she smiled at me,
- “What is it?” I asked.
- “It's for you and brother Alessandro to get married and live happily and even give birth to a cute neice for me” she said with a depreciating smile
- “Isabella, that wish won't..” I was about to speak but she beat me to it with a question
- “And do you know what I fear the most”
- “What's that?” I asked,
- “That I would die before any of those comes to fulfillment. Sister, will I really die? I don't want to die this early” she looked at me with teary eyes.
- My heart broke into pieces at the sight of her teary face.
- I knew she was scared, she just didn't act that way.
- How can a 12 year old child not be scared of impending death.
- “You won't die, you'll be fine and besides your illness is not an incurable one” I coaxed
- “I'm still scared, what if I don't wake up tomorrow? And you said the hospital is…”
- “No, the hospital is trying its best and you are recovering just fine, ok?” hugged her and patted her back, trying my best to comfort her.
- “Sister, I.. I.. I'm so scared. I'm very terrified when mom coughes out blood, will she leave us? I overheard from that nurse…”
- “Shhh, when did you start believing side talks?. I said all will be fine. Don't you trust me? and besides is your faith in God so weak?” I asked.
- “I trust you and I trust God the most” she said admist her small sobs
- ‘Now please wipe your tears and eat your food and also stop your wishful thinking” I said.
- “Wishful thinking? Don't you like brother Alessandro anymore?” she asked
- “Isabella, when did me and you ever sit to discuss that I liked him? ”I asked
- “Whatever” she said as she tarted eating
- “Silly girl” I smiled as I ruffled her hair
- “Hey! Don't make it loose” she whined and I laughed.
- **********************
- “Nevan, why didn't you tell me Olivia was already pregnant. How could you keep it from me?”
- There was no response from Nevan as he was focused on typing on his laptop.
- “Nevan, I'm speaking to you” Chen xiao couldn't take his silence anymore.
- “It's not Olivia” Nevan said.
- “What? What do you mean?” She asked in pure confusion.
- “It's not Olivia” Nevan repeated,
- “I don't understand what you're trying to say. Olivia is your girlfriend, isn't she?” Chen Xiao was still utterly confused.
- “She is my girlfriend but she's not the one that got pregnant” Nevan said.
- “So you mean you cheated on Olivia?” She asked.
- “I won't say I did” Nevan replied
- “Then what did you do?”Chen Xiao asked.
- “Can we not talk about this, please” Nevan finally looked at her,
- “What do you mean by that? How can we not talk about it? You impregnated a girl and we shouldn't talk about it?”Chen Xiao's voice rose as she spoke.
- “Your mum won't be happy to hear about such a thing, will she?”,
- With that sentence ,Nevan's face darkened,
- “Ma, I know what I am doing and I need no one to teach me how to do it. Rest assured, I have got everything under control” Nevan said.
- “Qingchaun, you know I'm not trying to control you , I just want to help you every step of the way” Chen Xiao softened her voice.
- The frown on Nevan's face deepened upon hearing his other name,
- ‘Qingchaun’
- Only his mother called him that.
- “Ma, I want to make a call. I'll be back soon” Nevan stood up from his chair and left the study room without waiting for Chen Xiao's response.
- Immediately he walked out of the study, his phone rang.
- He looked at caller ID and answered it.
- “Speak” he commanded,
- “Young master , I've done as you instructed ”
- “Good”
- “However, there's a problem at the building site”
- “What's the problem”
- “The steel materials that just arrived from Germany…. ”
- There was silence at the other end.
- “What happened to them?”Nevan asked.
- “They were stolen”
- “Stolen?”
- “Yes”
- “And what have you done about it? , do I have to be present for such a small issue?” Nevan asked
- “No no sir, we'll do something about it”
- “Good, I need results before the end of today or else”
- “I.. I. I'll get to it right away”
- “Start now!” Nevan said and disconnected the call.
- He was about to walk back into the study but changed his mind and went down the stairs instead. He walked into the kitchen, where an elderly woman and a young girl were cooking.
- “Ma'am Bernila” he called out and the elderly woman turned to him
- “Young master, did you call for me?” she spoke.
- It took a while a before she got to where he was standing.
- “Yes” she bowed
- “Young master” the young girl also bowed and greeted upon seeing him.
- “Get the third room on the second floor tidied up, a guest wil arrive soon” Nevan said
- “Yes sir” Bernila bowed and said
- “Am I permitted to ask a question? , young master” Bernila spoke up
- Nevan stared at her for a while before agreeing
- “Sir, may I ask in what style do you want the room to be in”
- “Girly enough for a 22 year old lady” Nevan answered and left the kitchen.
- “Ma'am Bernila, a 22 year old lady? Could it be…?” the young girl in the kitchen spoke up.
