Chapter 10 Song Meiqian's secret

  • Before he hit stepped on the gas pedal, I pushed the car door open and got out. I held onto the car door to stabilize my body and walked unsteadily to the road to flag a taxi.
  • He did not chase after me, and I did not look back either.
  • I leaned against the back seat. My eyelids felt heavy. The alcohol went rampage inside my body and I was about to fall asleep.
  • "Strange, why is there a car tailing us..."
  • When I got off the car, I heard the driver muttering such a remark in my dazed state. I was too dizzy to understand what he just said. I just paid the fare and returned to the hotel.
  • The next day, I woke up with a splitting headache, and my whole body felt weak. Just as I was falling back to sleep, my mind was bombarded by the sentences that I had said to Cheng Jinghao last night.
  • "When we got married, it’s true that I needed your help. But I only agreed to the deal because it was you..."
  • "I thought you would care for me, even if it’s just a little."
  • I bolted up from the bed. I couldn’t understand myself for saying those things last night. Did he realize that I liked him?
  • I pulled my hair in frustration. For a moment, I was both regretful and anxious.
  • His indifferent attitude resurfaced in my mind. Let it be then—the situation could not get any worse anyway.
  • In any case, I had decided to get a divorce. This was as bad as it could be.
  • I controlled the depressed feeling inside of me and headed straight to the bathroom to clean myself up. The moment I got out of the bathroom, I got a message from my mother, asking me at what time I be at the hospital.
  • It was only now that I recalled—two days before, I mentioned that I would go to the hospital to visit her. I quickly dressed up and went out.
  • The ward was particularly quiet at noon time. I walked at a steady pace towards my mother's ward, but as I passed by an ajar door of another ward, I suddenly stopped in my track.
  • "Don't visit anymore. What should we do if somebody sees you? Bao's just a little feverish, and he had just fallen asleep. I will be keeping him company."
  • "What are you talking about? Back then, if it wasn't to help you to repay your gambling debts, would I have gone as far as climbing on to Ning Hairong that old codger's bed?"
  • "No matter how wealthy he's, he's still nothing compared to Cheng Jinghao. Can you not be so short-sighted? Besides, you are the only for me..."
  • "You were so mean yesterday! Today? Today can't do. Cheng Jinghao is already back."
  • ...
  • Listening to such shameless remarks from a door away, I felt anger surging from the bottom of my heart, I couldn’t help but clenched my fists even while holding bags of fruits.
  • Because the voice inside the ward... belonged to Song Meiqian!
  • I always thought she just wanted to frame me, but it happened that I accidentally found out about her grand plan!
  • Apart from my father, apart from Cheng Jinghao... there was even another man whom she was still having a relationship with, and they happened to be talking on the phone!
  • If it was not because I had seen the result of the paternity test, I would start to doubt who was the father of Bao.
  • The later part of their dialog became increasingly crude to the ear. I left in a hurry. My heart had practically jumped to my throat.
  • I could not tell how I felt. The affection that I sought after in such tediousness, was ruthlessly disregarded by another.
  • Cheng Jinghao... He had so much feelings for Song Meiqian...
  • Despite how he treated me, I still could not help but felt sorry for him.
  • If he found out about this matter, could he accept it?
  • I walked absent-mindedly into my mother's ward and placed the fruits on to the TV cabinet, "Mom, I bought your favourite mangoes. Do you want to have one now?"
  • My mother's complexion was a bit pale. She shook her head and said, "Just leave them there."
  • I realised that her mood seemed to be very bad as I chatted with her. I asked her about it but she kept saying she was alright.
  • Just as I felt helpless, the doctor walked in.
  • "Jing, a nurse said she saw you coming, so I thought I'd come to remind you—you have to talk to your mother. She must stay in a good mood to help with her recovery."
  • I nodded profusely. Later, I found out from the doctor that last night, my mother was once again admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, but the hospital could not reach my cell phone.
  • I really wanted to give myself a tight slaps. My mother was in the hospital hovering between life and death, while I was completely wasted from drinking too much.
  • After the doctor left, I asked my mother what actually happened last night.
  • Forced by my stubborn attitude, my mother could only sigh and say, "Song Meiqian came last night. She said she has moved into your place. She also said that Bao... isn't your dad's but Jinghao's kid—is this true?"
  • My fury flared up. Based on Song Meiqian's temperament, these were definitely not her words were. It would had been much more arrogant and overbearing.
  • Besides, she was the reason my mother was hospitalized for the past few years.
  • She obviously knew my mother did not have the best of health, but she still came over and said those just to upset her. What was she up to exactly?!
  • I was so furious, but it would not be appropriate for me to blow my lid in front of my mother. I could only lie to her, "Don't listen to her nonsense. There's no such thing. Do you not know me? I would not let them bully me like this."
  • She finally felt assured and said softly, "It's best if there's no such thing. You had been stubborn since young, but in a marriage, two people have to get along together—you have to be accommodating and forgiving towards each other. Please don't wait till you have lost it to feel regretful."
  • While forcefully suppressing the anger that I had, I nodded with a smile. "I won't. You should be rest assured."
  • It was only after my mother fell asleep that I tiptoed out of the ward, took out my cell phone and gave Cheng Jinghao a call.
  • Wasn't Song Meiqian unbridled? Didn't she think she could soon take away the title "Mrs. Cheng"?
  • But I would not let her get what she hoped for. No man could tolerate himself getting cuckolded, let alone the man being Cheng Jinghao!
  • Cheng Jinghao's faint voice rang out from the other end of the call, "Hello?"
  • I clenched my fist tightly and said, "I need to talk to you."
  • He was silent for a moment before answering, "Come to the office. I happen to have something to tell you as well."
  • Thinking that such a matter should indeed be discussed in person, I made a drive to Dongchen Corporation.
  • Our marriage was known only to the Chengs and his assistant, Chen Lin. But after so many years, there were also some employees who could guess that my relationship with Cheng Jinghao was not simple, so I could enter Dongchen's office building practically unimpeded.
  • Under everyone's stares, I pushed open the door to his designated office.
  • He was scanning through some documents. His side profile looked cold and chiseled, with a focused and earnest expression on his face.
  • Except for me, probably no one dared to enter his office without any scruple like this. Without even looking up, he asked, "What do you want to talk about?"
  • Initially, I was so angry that I wanted to tell him about everything bluntly. But now that I stood in front of him, I began to hesitate.
  • For a moment, I could not organize my words, so I said, "You can go first."
  • He stood up, reached for a file from his drawer and passed it to me. "Read through this—sign if there's no problem."
  • I took the file and was dumbstruck the moment I opened it. My voice was a bit hoarse, "Divorce papers?"
