Chapter 6. Deception

  • Sally, watching the doctor examine her foot, fearing in her heart that he might discover her and expose her to Christian, took a deep breath, building up her courage, because it was better for her to tell him the truth before he ended up discovering it for himself.
  • "Doctor, excuse me, but I don't think it's necessary to send me for a series of X-rays, actually my accident is not that serious, I feel fine, I'm pretending to be in an accident," she began to say, fearing the doctor's rebuke. "Don't scold me, please, I just wanted to get a little more attention from my husband, because he lives working and doesn't dedicate enough time to me, that made me think of a plan to make him take care of me.”
  • The woman's lie was an attempt to gain the doctor's sympathy.
  • "I need you to help me, right now, when the one who brought me in comes, please support me, remember, it is only a white lie, I promise to tell you the truth later and I will not let any kind of responsibility fall on you. Tell him, "I have a small crack in my ankle, I need to be well taken care of, I need absolute rest and not to be left alone, because the condition of my foot is delicate and I cannot move.
  • At the woman's words, the doctor's expression was one of surprise.
  • "Madam, how can you make me lie? Do you know the responsibility I have as a doctor?" she asked incredulously.
  • "Please, I beg you," the woman pleaded, clasping her hands in a pleading gesture. "Understand, it is for a good cause, I promise not to get you into trouble, I will clear everything up in time."
  • The doctor, still hesitant to accept the woman's proposal, but her pleading expression finally convinced him.
  • "All right, I hope you will keep your word, I can't risk my job, the director of this hospital is very strict, if he finds out that I am indulging in this deception, it could cost me my position and I have a family to support, I hope this will serve you to get more attention from your husband."
  • Meanwhile, Christian walked to the doctor's office, but it made him uncomfortable that the assistant entered the office and left him standing outside, patience was not one of his virtues, he never waited for anyone, he looked at the clock in a gesture of desperation, just as he was about to knock on the door, it opened wide, allowing him to see the assistant, the doctor and Sally, who was still lying on the gurney with her eyes closed, but there was a wince of pain on her face.
  • "Well Mr. Goldman, your wife..." Christian frowned at the appointment and interrupted the doctor.
  • "What are you talking about doctor, wife?" he asked angrily, Who the hell made the doctor think it was his wife? But before he could correct his mistake, Sally winced in pain.
  • "Oh no, it hurts too much, I can't stand it," she said with a look of anguish. "Could I have some painkillers to ease this pain, please?"
  • Seeing her in such distress, Christian became concerned and approached her, leaning back on the gurney and gently stroking her forehead as she continued to moan.
  • The doctor watched her in disbelief as he wondered, "If I wasn't sure of her condition, I would end up believing her, she really is a very good actress.
  • "Doctor, please provide her with medication so that it is not so painful for her, it worries me to see her like this."
  • "Yes, I already have, the lady must take a lot of care, she must keep absolute rest, at least eight days to be able to improve that foot, she must keep it immobilized and even she must avoid moving, so she will need someone always with her to take care of her, feed her, take her to the bathroom and in short to be aware of her progress."
  • The doctor paused to consider his words,
  • "Maybe with your attention I will manage to recover soon, women want to be pampered by their husbands when they are sick."
  • Again Christian frowned, but this time he managed to make it clear to the doctor, leaving him a bit confused.
  • "Doctor, you are wrong, Sally is not my wife, she is my friend, the wife of my best friend, I don't know why you think there is a marriage bond between us."
  • The doctor looked at the woman, feeling deceived, and she looked down in apparent embarrassment.
  • "I'm sorry, Mr. Goldman, I misunderstood, don't worry. In a few minutes you will be able to take your friend with you, I will send for a wheelchair, that way it will be easier for her to get to the car. There is no need to leave her here any longer, after all, the lady will know how to take care of herself in order to recover quickly," the doctor said with a strained voice, which made Christian curious, but before Sally could complain, he turned his attention to her.
  • "Thank you, Doctor, may I have a card in case there are any complications and I need to talk to you?" he asked and the doctor replied in a way that seemed strange to him, but he let it pass.
  • "Don't worry, Mrs. Sally knows very well where she stands," he said, still looking at her intensely, in a look that was undoubtedly annoyed.
  • Christian carried Sally in the chair to his car, helped her into it, handed her back to the waiter and started to drive, more because she didn't know where they were going, she confessed her concern to him.
  • "Christian, I'm worried about staying home alone, I won't be able to..." but before she could continue the man interrupted her.
  • "Sally, you're not going to your house, I'm taking you to mine, I'll take very good care of you," he replied calmly.
  • She was thrilled at his suggestion, although she tried to appear unaffected and immediately pretended to be embarrassed at making him uncomfortable.
  • "I'm embarrassed for you, I don't know if it's a good idea to go to your house, you're a very busy man, you won't be able to take care of me, I don't want to be a burden to you."
  • Just then they turned into the road leading to Christian's amazing mansion, located in one of the most luxurious and exclusive areas of the island, with a breathtaking view of the sea.
  • "Don't worry Sally, for me it's not a burden, besides Joseph has left me in charge of taking care of you and I really neglected you during these two weeks, that's why I decided to bring you to my house, because that way I can be aware of you and check by myself that you are well at all times," the man replied to reassure her, meanwhile he was thinking of hiring a couple of people to dedicate themselves exclusively to the woman's care.
  • "Christian, I don't have any clothes with me, how am I supposed to change?" she asked, feigning humiliation.
  • "Don't worry, I will call an acquaintance from one of the best store networks in the country, she will bring you clothes, you can choose as you wish, don't be embarrassed to pay, because I will charge it all to my account."
  • He called one of the male staff working in his house to come up to the room, while he took the opportunity to go downstairs and make several calls, not only to the owner of the clothing store, but also to hire the services of a nurse and a caregiver, when everything was ready, he went back upstairs to talk to Sally, when she saw him, she smiled with joy, thinking she was going to keep him company.
  • "I'm really sorry you have to put all your work on hold to take care of me, you should have hired someone, I don't want to bother you," she said with obvious shyness.
  • Christian, hearing her, let out a laugh.
  • "Sally, stop embarrassing yourself, do you think I'm going to stay here and take care of you? Well, for your peace of mind it's not like that, not for lack of desire, you know how much I appreciate and mean what you do for me, but as you know I'm a very busy man and I'm in the middle of some very important negotiations that I can't avoid, in about thirty minutes a nurse and an assistant will arrive, They are the ones who will take care of you, you will be comfortable here and you will not be in need of anything," the man declared firmly, while Sally's face turned into a grimace of displeasure, which she tried to simulate with a smile so as not to show her discomfort.
  • Everything can be faked. Joy, pain, hatred, sickness, recovery... even love. Donald Sutherland.
