• The city was louder than she remembered. Car horns, voices, the occasional siren—it all felt distant, like echoes through a glass wall. She moved through it like a ghost, her face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses. Not because she feared being seen by him. He wouldn’t be looking. But because the version of her that had belonged to him couldn’t bear to be seen.
