• The only sound in the hallway was the sound of my shoes hitting the tile floor. When I saw Thomas leave Alex's room, I stopped short. His face was red and stressed, like he had just come from a fight instead of a meeting. He barely looked at me and brushed past me without saying anything or even giving me the silly grin he always had.
