Chapter 6 A Family Dinner

  • "Kathy, have some more. You must be hungry. Mom's cooking is quite good," Peterson said, serving Kathy some food. He turned to Evelyn, "Mom, you really went to so much trouble today, coming all this way and cooking for us."
  • "Thank you, auntie... I mean, thank you, Mom," Kathy said. It had been many years since she had called anyone "Mom."
  • "Oh, it's no trouble at all," Evelyn said, beaming. "Mrs. Jess and the others bought and prepared all the ingredients. I just cooked these two dishes. As long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters." She couldn't stop smiling. She had always wanted a sweet daughter, but her health hadn't allowed for more children after Joah. Then she had hoped for years that Joah would bring a girl home, but year after year, nothing. He hadn't dated anyone since, always hanging around with Wute. She had started to worry about her son's orientation. But now, he had brought home a wife who could legally call her "Mom" - how could she not be overjoyed?
