Chapter 4 First Night
- Elara paced the room like a caged animal. Her body still felt too hot. The throbbing ache between her thighs hadn’t gone away, and every time she thought about Kael pinning her against the wall earlier, it got worse.
- “This is ridiculous,” she muttered, running her hands through her damp hair. “I’ve had bad dates before, but this is next level. Fated mate with a side of supernatural blue balls. Grandma would be so proud.”
- She tried the door again. Still locked.
- She flopped onto the bed and stared at the ceiling. “Grandma, if you’re watching from somewhere, I hope you’re laughing your ass off. You tried to warn me about the shadowed lines and I thought you were just a crazy old lady telling bedtime stories.”
- Minutes stretched. She was just starting to doze off when the door finally opened.
- Kael stepped inside, looking tense and tired. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it for a moment.
- “They’re gone for now,” he said. “We scared them off the eastern border.”
- Elara sat up. “Good. Great. Now can we talk about the fact that I almost had an orgasm against a wall earlier because of some magic bond? Because that’s a little concerning.”
- Kael’s lips twitched. “The bond is… eager.”
- “Eager?” Elara laughed. “That’s one word for it. I felt like I was going to combust. Is that normal? Or am I just extra sensitive to werewolf magic?”
- Kael moved to the couch and sat down, giving her space. “Not usually this fast. The Eternal Bond is powerful. Especially with our history.”
- Elara pulled her knees up to her chest. “Tell me about that history. The parts you sealed away. I want to know everything.”
- Kael ran a hand through his hair. “You were very young. Maybe five or six. Your family was part of our world, even if you didn’t fully know it. Your bloodline helped create the original Eternal Bond centuries ago. There was an attack. A rival pack wanted your family’s power. I was assigned to protect you.”
- Elara watched him carefully. “What happened during the attack?”
- “I got you out,” Kael said. “But I couldn’t save the others. Your parents… they didn’t make it. I blamed myself for years. The bond went dormant after that. I thought I lost you forever.”
- Elara was quiet for a long moment. “So I died in that life?”
- Kael nodded. “Your soul came back. The bond recognized you the moment you touched the stone.”
- Elara let out a long breath. “That’s a lot to process. I went from broke, heartbroken, and unemployed to reincarnated mate of a guilty werewolf alpha. My life is a soap opera now.”
- Kael looked at her. “I’m sorry. For everything. I failed you once. I won’t fail you again.”
- Elara studied him. “You keep saying that. But you also say you’re broken. What does that mean exactly? What have you done?”
- Kael was quiet for a while. “After I lost you, I changed. I became harder. Colder. The pack calls me the most feared Alpha for a reason. I’ve done things I’m not proud of to keep them safe. Things that haunt me.”
- Elara moved to the edge of the bed, closer to him. “So I’m supposed to be your redemption? That’s a lot of pressure for someone who was a waitress two weeks ago and could barely keep a houseplant alive.”
- Kael smiled faintly. “The bond thinks you can handle it.”
- Elara laughed softly. “The bond is very optimistic. I can barely handle my own laundry. Now I’m supposed to heal the big bad Alpha’s trauma? No pressure.”
- They sat in silence for a moment. The air between them felt thick with tension.
- “So what happens now?” Elara asked. “Do I just stay here? Become the human Luna or whatever you call it? Do I get a werewolf starter pack?”
- Kael leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “You can stay as long as you need. But the bond will keep pushing us closer. The heat. The pull. It’s only going to get stronger.”
- Elara felt that pull now. She wanted to move closer to him. “And if I fight it?”
- “It will hurt,” Kael said. “And it might weaken both of us at the worst time. Rivals are already circling.”
- Elara stood up and walked over to him. She stopped right in front of where he sat.
- “So what do you want, Kael?” she asked quietly. “The big bad Alpha who needs redemption. What do you want from me?”
- Kael looked up at her. His eyes were dark. “I want you safe. I want you happy. And… I want you. All of you. But I won’t force it.”
- Elara’s heart raced. She reached out and touched his jaw. “This is crazy. I barely know you. But I really want to kiss you right now. Which is confusing as hell.”
- Kael’s hands came up to her waist. He pulled her gently between his legs. “Then kiss me.”
- Elara leaned down. Their lips were inches apart. She could feel his breath. The heat between them was electric.
- Just as their lips were about to touch, Kael turned his head slightly. He rested his forehead against hers instead.
- “If we complete this bond,” he said, voice rough, “there’s no going back. And I’m not the hero you remember from that past life. I’m darker now. Harder. You deserve better than what I’ve become.”
- Elara pulled back just enough to look at him. “Maybe I get to decide that for myself.”
- Kael’s eyes searched hers. “You should rest. Tomorrow will be difficult. The pack will want answers. And the rivals won’t stop.”
- He stood up slowly, putting distance between them again.
- Elara felt the familiar tug of pain in her chest as he moved away. She winced and rubbed the spot.
- “See?” Kael said softly. “The bond doesn’t like when we’re apart.”
- Elara rubbed her chest. “This is going to suck, isn’t it?”
- Kael nodded. “Probably. But I’ll be right outside the door if you need me.”
- He walked to the door, then paused. “Try to sleep, little one.”
- “Don’t call me that,” Elara said, but she was smiling a little.
- Kael left the room, closing the door softly behind him.
- Elara stood there for a long moment, body still buzzing, heart confused, and mind racing with everything she had learned.
- She whispered to the empty room, “I am in so much trouble.”
