Chapter 68

  • Candice lay on the bed, watching Mason work on his laptop, his brow furrowed in concentration. The conversation she had with Julie was still fresh in her mind. She had lied about fixing a wedding date with Mason but knew that she needed to make that a reality soon if she wanted to keep her position in his life. She couldn't risk waiting; it had to happen as soon as possible before he remembered what she had done, the pictures he had seen of her and Justin. Before, he could remember annoyingly persistent Raven, who kept professing her love for Mason in any way she could.
  • Mason scrolled through document after document, his fingers tapping at the keys. Every so often, he would stop and frown, staring at the screen as if searching for something that wasn't there. His personality had changed, too. He wasn’t quite as kind or sure of himself. He had always carried himself with such confidence that she had always felt safe when he was there because she knew he could handle anything that came his way.
  • Mason was overwhelmed by the uncertainty. He hated how amnesia had reshaped his reality. His memory was a blank slate with only traces left like shadows following him around but not quite connected to anything; everything seemed to confuse him. It had been a long time since he had felt this unsure about what was happening in his life, he second-guessed everything. Second-guessed, third-guessed, however many times it took so long for him to make the simplest of decisions. A maid had offered him coffee with his breakfast, and while he was pretty sure that he had coffee every morning, he didn’t know the answer and simply looked at the maid as if asking her what his answer would be. She was kind and explained that he often had a flat white coffee with two sugars or an espresso. She brought him a flat white.
