- I stood at the entrance of the house, staring for a long moment before stepping inside. It was like stepping through a portal into the past. Everything was the same, the mahogany banisters, the smell of old varnish, the faint echo of laughter that once lived in these walls. This was the house I had run through as a boy, back when the world was still soft and kind, when my biggest worry was whether I’d be late for dinner.
