Chapter 5

  • Mia:
  • “Of course, I'm not going to go with him. Hell, he should consider himself lucky that…”
  • “He is the boss, Mia. You're not going to be able to just ignore that.” Alexandra, the one friend that I had here, said looking at me. “Plus, he's cute, you can't deny that. The media goes all around him, he is like, the face of the month all year round. You should be considered lucky to go out with him, you know that.”
  • “Don't be fooled by his expression, it's just something to hide whatever vulgarness he hides behind that face of his.” I said, rolling my eyes. She looked me in the eye and shook her head at me. I could tell that she was seeing my anger, and I could tell that she was reading through it, but I did not care. “Plus, I think that you know that Anastasia shouldn’t be staying at home by herself while I am out for dinner.”
  • That night played in my head, and I wrapped my arm around myself. He couldn't actually be here. Not on the day that he and I slept together. Not on the day that I tried my best to avoid everyone simply because I need it to be alone. The day that he rejected me.
  • It was the second worst day of my life.
  • “You know that Anastasia is going to be with me and not by herself, that shouldn’t be an excuse. Why do you hate him so much? That's not like you know him.” She said, and I closed my eyes. “Do you know him?”
  • “Of course, I don't.” I like choosing to keep that truth to myself. She was human. She was not going to understand how things worked in the wolf world. Not that I counted as part of them. It seemed I was not even part of a family or a pack. I was a loner, a human who lived by herself. My own family refused to see me. “Why would I know such a man?”
  • “Just get ready. It's bad enough that you told him not to pick you up. You are going to meet him there, finish whatever it is that you have to take care of and come back home. I'll be waiting for you here. I won't go to sleep. I’ll put Nasia to sleep, though. After she’s done with her homework.” She said, and I sighed. She was my housemate. The two of us chose to pay the rent together. It made things easier for us, she helped me raise my daughter, and considering that I was on my own most of the time when it came to things, with no family members to help, at least I knew that I had someone to resolve to, someone to speak to when I needed it. And I knew that she felt the same way, especially considering that she had no one around her.
  • “You don't have to wait for me. I don't know when I'll be back. And you've been up since very early morning. You went out long before I did.” I said, looking her in the eye. She smiled and looked down at me looked down at the dress that I was wearing.
  • “Don't worry, I got some rest when you were at work. I'll be waiting for you, plus tomorrow is my day off so it's not like I have anything to do.” She said and I nodded. I knew that after breaking up with her boyfriend, she spent most of her nights here within the house.
  • “You look beautiful, mom.” Anastasia said, making my eyes brighten when she saw me walking around the house with my dress and heels. I did my best to keep it simple, but it wasn’t an easy task to do when I had my mind racing with more thoughts than I should. “Where are you going?”
  • “Your mom has a date.” Alexandra teased, making my eyes widen.
  • “I have a work dinner, and it is not a date.” I hissed, glaring at Alexandra who rolled her eyes at me. “You are going to be good with your aunt Alexandra, okay? Your mom has a lot to take care of today and I might be late.”
  • “Is he cute?” Anastasia asked, and I fake gasped, making her laugh. It hurt me to know that I was going out with her father, and yet, I couldn’t help but find myself growing curious about whether or not he would he even care to acknowledge her as a daughter. I was the human that he didn’t want after all…
  • “I won’t be late.” I said, brushing her comment off. Alexandra nodded in assurance, silently letting me know not to worry about them.
  • I took a deep breath and walked towards the door. My heart pounded against my chest, but I knew that I had to do this. I knew that this was part of the deal that I made, the deal that I signed up to. The job that I was working at.
  • Whatever the past was, I needed to keep it behind me.
  • But how could I when I know that my girl is his…?
  • I walked towards the taxi stop and nodded at one of the taxi drivers. He stopped his car. I got inside the car making sure to keep myself decent at the dress was short but thankfully not too short to for me to look too forward or excited to be with him. To be seeing HIM.
  • “Can you please take me to the El Fiori.” I said and the driver nodded before starting the car. I looked out the window as I got lost in my thoughts before shaking my head.
  • My phone buzzed and I looked down at it. It was call from him. My heart raced against my chest. The idea of him finding my number was not one that I liked, but I knew that it was going to be easy for him considering that he was now the owner of the company, the HR were forced to give him the number. Technically he would not even have to force them. All he had to do was ask. Especially considering that I was supposed to be his right hand.
  • “What do you want?” I said, answering the phone.
  • “Now is this a way to speak to your boss?” He asked, and I rolled my eyes.
  • “You of all people should be lucky that I'm still choosing to speak to you.” I said through gritted teeth, ignoring the pain that I felt in my chest. This was a job. I had to remind myself that I was working. I was an employee. This was not personal. I was not his friend, nor was I associating with him. “So unless you want me to hang up, I would suggest that you answer what do you want.”
  • “Where are you?”
  • “I'm on the way. Is there anything that you need, Your Royal Highness?” I said, choosing to be sarcastic.
  • “Sarcasm. You play that like…”
  • “With a man like you, of course, I would play with more than just a little sarcasm. Then again, I doubt that you would understand that, would you?” I said before hanging up. Would imagine him looking at his phone, surprised that I hung up at him, but I knew that this was something that had to happen. He needed to understand that I did not want anything to do with him. He needed to understand that that girl who was happy for his attention was gone.
  • “What are you really getting yourself into?” I whispered to myself. “What are you really getting into, Mia…?”
