- I sat at the small wooden desk in my room, my fingers hovering over the trackpad of my laptop. A list of job postings filled the screen, each one a potential escape, a chance to regain some of the independence I had lost. Each one of them was making me more determined to work hard to get what I needed. If I was just going to sit back here, I was just going to end up being thrown out and I could not risk that for myself or my daughter.
