Chapter 8 The First Battle

  • Lucian's POV
  • "Enemy forces crossing the ridge my king," the scout shouted as he rode into camp. "They match the numbers and route Seraphina warned us about."
  • I gripped my sword tighter and gave the order to move out. The border skirmish hit exactly as she had predicted three days earlier. We rode hard toward the eastern pass with warriors falling in behind me. Dust rose from the ground as we closed the distance. I kept my focus sharp but thoughts of Seraphina stayed at the edge of my mind. She had given us the timing and weak points without being asked. Now we faced the proof of her words in real time.
  • We reached the battlefield as fighting broke out. Arrows flew and steel clashed against steel. I charged forward with my main force and cut through the first wave of attackers. The enemy fought hard but we held the line better than expected. A beta rode up beside me during a brief lull.
  • "Seraphina sent fresh details through a runner," he called over the noise. "She says their leader stays back on the left flank with reserves. Hit there now and we break them."
  • I nodded once and redirected two units toward the left. Her information proved right again. We struck the flank hard and confusion spread through the enemy ranks. Warriors who once viewed her as a rejected omega now shouted her name with respect as they pushed the advantage. Lives were saved because of what she shared. I saw it in the fewer wounded we carried back and the way the men fought with renewed confidence.
  • I stayed on the front lines through the thick of it. My blade met resistance more than once but I pressed on. Between strikes I caught glimpses of Seraphina at the rear command point. She stood near the maps with several warriors around her. She pointed to positions and spoke quickly while they listened. Her calm focus stood out amid the chaos. She did not panic or hesitate. Instead she delivered clear instructions that shifted our tactics at key moments.
  • One warrior near me took down an opponent then turned. "That woman knew their movements before they made them," he said with clear admiration. "We would have lost half our number without her."
  • I felt a surge of pride mixed with something deeper as I heard those words. Seraphina had earned real respect on this field. The mate bond pulled at me even in the middle of battle. It reminded me constantly that she was mine despite her rejection. Watching her direct strategy from the command area only strengthened that feeling. She showed a sharp mind I had never fully recognized before.
  • The fight turned in our favor after we followed her latest guidance. The enemy broke and retreated across the border. We secured the area with minimal losses on our side. As the dust settled I rode back toward the command point. Seraphina stood surrounded by warriors who thanked her openly. She accepted their words with steady nods but kept her expression controlled.
  • I dismounted and approached her directly. My body still carried the heat of battle and the bond flared stronger in her presence. "Your information saved lives today," I told her. "The men respect what you did here."
  • She met my eyes without backing down. "I gave what was needed to protect the pack. Nothing more."
  • Her voice stayed even yet I saw the tension in her shoulders. She had just proven her value in front of everyone and still treated me with that same defiance. I stepped closer so only she could hear my next words. "You continue to surprise me Seraphina. Your mind works in ways that benefit us all yet you use it against me at every turn."
  • She did not reply right away. Around us warriors continued to move and talk about the battle but my attention stayed fixed on her. The respect I felt for her strategic thinking mixed with the obsession that had been building since the ceremony. She was no longer just the mate who rejected me. She had become someone whose actions affected the entire pack. I wanted her even more because of it.
  • I gave orders for the return to the palace but lingered near her as we prepared to move out. The skirmish had shown me another side of her capabilities. My obsession ran deeper now and so did my respect. She had changed the outcome of this fight and in doing so she changed how I saw her. I would keep her close after this. Closer than before.
