Chapter 1 The Second Chance

  • Seraphina’s POV
  • "You took everything from me once," I whispered to the empty room as I shot up in bed that morning.
  • My heart hammered so hard I thought it might crack my ribs. Sweat stuck my shift to my back while the memories flooded in without mercy. This was the day of the mate ceremony all over again. I remembered dying last time, the way the pack watched as they dragged me to the block. Lucian had stood there with Vesper at his side, his face blank as if I meant nothing.
  • I swung my legs over the side of the cot and pressed my feet to the cold floor. No more. This time I knew every move he would make and every lie Vesper would spin. I would not let them break me again.
  • "Why should I bow to you now?" I muttered under my breath while I stared at my reflection in the cracked mirror. Lucian, the Alpha King, my so-called fated mate. In my first life he had rejected me in private first, then let Vesper accuse me of selling pack secrets to outsiders. They made it look so real that even my few friends turned away. The axe fell fast after the trial. I still felt the ghost of that pain across my neck if I thought about it too long.
  • Washing my face with cold water from the basin, I pulled on the simple white dress they expected me to wear for the ceremony. The fabric felt rough against my skin but I did not care. Servants would come soon to escort me. I practiced the words in my head while I braided my hair. I would say them clear and loud so the whole court heard. Lucian would not get the satisfaction of seeing me bow to him again.
  • A knock sounded on the door. "Seraphina it is time," a servant called out.
  • I opened the door and followed her down the long hall. My stomach twisted into knots but I kept my steps steady. Guards lined the path to the grand hall. I could hear voices inside already murmuring about how lucky I was to be fated to the Alpha King. They had no idea what was coming.
  • We stepped into the ceremony hall. The place felt packed with pack members and nobles. Lucian stood at the front on the raised platform. He looked exactly as I remembered tall and commanding with that dark hair and sharp gaze. Vesper sat nearby in a fine gown watching everything with possessive eyes. The bond tried to pull at me the moment I crossed the threshold, that strange tug toward Lucian. I hated it. I hated how my body still recognized him even after what he had done.
  • The officiant raised his voice. "Today we witness the union of our Alpha King Lucian and his fated mate Seraphina Voss."
  • Alpha Lucian stepped forward, his eyes locked on mine. For a second I saw the recognition hit him. The bond snapped into place for him too. He reached out his hand expecting me to take it like a good little omega.
  • I stopped a few feet away and lifted my chin. "No," I said loud enough for everyone to hear.
  • Whispers started spreading through the crowd. Lucian frowned. "What did you say?"
  • "I reject you Lucian Blackthorn as my fated mate," I continued keeping my voice firm. "I reject this bond and I reject you as Alpha King in front of the entire court. You are unworthy of me and unworthy of this pack.”
  • The hall went dead silent for one breath, then exploded into chaos. People shouted questions and arguments broke out in every corner. Someone dropped a cup and it clattered loud against the stone floor. Guards shifted nervously unsure whether to move.
  • Lucian stood frozen on the platform, his face went pale at first then turned red with fury. His hands clenched into fists at his sides.
  • "Seraphina, what is the meaning of this?" he demanded his voice cutting through the noise like a whip. "How dare you reject me?"
  • I met his stare without flinching. "I said I reject you. In front of everyone here. I will not be your mate. Not today. Not ever." The words tasted good leaving my mouth. All the fear from my first life burn ed away in that moment and left only a hard satisfaction.
  • Vesper’s face twisted. She moved closer to Lucian and touched his arm. "She has lost her mind," she hissed. "An omega dares speak to the Alpha King this way?"
  • Murmurs grew into shouts. A few warriors stepped forward like they expected a fight. Lucian raised one hand and the noise dropped, but it did not disappear. He walked down from the platform until he stood right in front of me. Close enough that I could see the muscle jumping in his jaw.
  • "Explain yourself," he said. Each word came out tight. "Now."
  • I lifted my shoulders in a small shrug. "There is nothing to explain. I simply don't want you or the bond is it that hard to comprehend?” Inside I felt a rush of adrenaline mixed with the ache of the rejected bond. It hurt, but not as much as dying had. I could live with this pain.
  • The elder looked between us, clearly lost. "This has never happened in such a public manner," he muttered.
  • Voices rose on every side. Some called for my punishment. Others sounded confused or even impressed that an omega had spoken against the king. Lucian’s face stayed locked in fury, but I caught something else there too, a flicker of shock that ran deeper than simple anger.
  • I turned on my heel and started walking toward the side exit. My legs felt heavy yet they carried me forward. Behind me, I heard Lucian bark orders, but I did not stop. The rejection was done. The first step had been taken. Whatever came next, I would face it with both sets of memories guiding me.
