Chapter 2 First Sparks Of Obsession

  • Lucien's POV
  • The rejection still rang in my ears hours after she walked out of that hall. I sat in my private study with maps and reports spread across the table but none of it held my attention. Seraphina Voss had stood there in front of the entire court and told me I was unworthy. No omega had ever spoken to me that way. The mate bond should have weakened after her words yet it pulled at me even harder now. It tugged somewhere deep in my chest every time I thought of her. I refused to accept it. She was mine by right and I would make her see that.
  • I pushed back from the table and walked to the window. Guards patrolled the grounds below but my mind stayed fixed on her. How did she find the nerve to reject me so publicly? In all the years I had known her she seemed quiet and obedient. Something had changed in her overnight. I needed to understand it before this defiance spread through the pack.
  • A knock came at the door. One of my betas stepped inside and cleared his throat. "My king we have reports from the eastern border. Minor Alpha Harlan sent word that his patrol avoided an ambush this morning. He claims Seraphina warned him about it yesterday evening."
  • I turned sharply. "She warned him? How would she know about an ambush?"
  • The beta shifted on his feet. "Harlan said she approached him privately. She gave specific details about the attackers route and timing. His men caught them off guard and took prisoners. He wants to thank her in person."
  • I dismissed the beta with a wave but my thoughts raced. Seraphina had no business knowing military movements. She spent her time in the lower quarters with the other omegas. This did not fit. I felt irritation rise in me because her actions made me look unprepared in front of my own allies. At the same time something else stirred. She moved with purpose now.
  • I left the study and headed toward the training grounds where I knew Harlan often gathered with his warriors. Sure enough, I spotted Seraphina there speaking to the minor alpha near the edge of the field. I stayed back behind a row of supply crates and watched. She stood straight with her shoulders squared in a way I had never seen before. Harlan listened closely and nodded several times.
  • "You were right about the numbers too," Harlan said to her. "We would have lost good men without your warning. How did you come by this information?"
  • Seraphina kept her voice low but I caught most of it. "I overheard some talk near the borders. Better to act than regret it later. Keep your patrols tight for the next few days."
  • Harlan thanked her again and clasped her arm in respect. She accepted it without flinching. Most omegas would have lowered their eyes in his presence yet she met his gaze directly. I felt the bond pull tighter as I observed her. My irritation grew because she operated outside my control but I could not look away. There was strength in her now that I had missed before.
  • I stepped out from my position once Harlan walked away. Seraphina noticed me immediately. She did not run or bow her head like she once might have. Instead she waited with her arms at her sides.
  • "Seraphina," I said as I closed the distance. "You seem busy making decisions for my pack."
  • She lifted her chin slightly. "I shared what I knew to protect our people. Is that not what a pack member should do?"
  • Her tone carried no fear. The mate bond flared in response and sent heat through my veins. I stopped a few feet from her and studied her face. Those eyes held secrets now. "You rejected me this morning in front of everyone. Now you warn my alphas about threats I did not know existed. Explain yourself."
  • She did not answer right away. For a moment, I saw something flicker across her expression almost like calculation. Then she spoke again. "The pack needs strong leadership. If you cannot provide it others will step up where they can."
  • Her words hit like a challenge. I should have been furious yet part of me felt drawn to this new side of her. The defiance should have made me want to put her in her place but instead it sparked a dark fascination. She was no longer the meek girl I remembered. This version of Seraphina stood her ground and made moves that affected real outcomes.
  • I took one more step closer. The bond urged me to reach for her but I held back. "This is not over between us. I do not accept your rejection."
  • She held my stare without wavering. "That is your choice. I have made mine."
  • I watched her turn and walk away across the grounds. My hands clenched at my sides. Irritation still burned in my chest but it mixed with something deeper now. I needed to keep her close. I needed to watch every move she made. Seraphina had become a puzzle I could not ignore and the mate bond only made the pull stronger.
  • I signaled to one of my trusted guards nearby. "Follow her discreetly. Report everything she does."
  • As he moved to obey, I stayed in place a while longer. My mind turned over her warning to Harlan and the way she carried herself. She displayed unexpected strength today. That defiance should have angered me more but it did not. Instead it pulled me in. I would uncover what had changed in her and I would bring her back to where she belonged.
